The Legislative Yuan has today passed a third reading on an amendment granting same-sex couples the right to jointly adopt children.
This change to Article 20 of the Act for the Judicial Yuan’s Implementation of Constitutional Interpretation No. 748 aligns the rights of same-sex couples with those of heterosexual couples under the Civil Code.
Previously, the act permitted a same-sex partner to adopt only their spouse’s biological child.
Now, the amendment allows one partner to adopt the other's child or for the couple to jointly adopt, in line with the adoption provisions under the civil law.
Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Fan Yun championed the amendment, arguing it offers complete legal protection to parents, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
The move was widely lauded, with lawmakers expressing hope that Taiwan's steps toward equality will inspire similar progress in other countries.
This change, hailed as a victory for human rights, cements Taiwan's status as a pioneer in LGBT rights in Asia.
This milestone comes on the fourth anniversary of the legalization of same-sex marriage in Taiwan.
