Academia Sinica has announced the death of internationally renowned
astrophysicist and former National Tsing Hua University president Frank Shu.

Academia Sinica says Shu died in the United States on Sunday at the age of
80.

Shu was born in Kunming, China on June 2, 1943 and moved to Taiwan at the age
of five, before he and family relocated to the United States a year later.

He was afflicated with Academia Sinica and the U-S National Academy of
Sciences and was known for pioneering theoretical work in a wide range of
astrophysics-related fields, including the origin of meteorites.

He returned to Taiwan in 2002 to take up the position of National Tsing Hua
University president; it was a post he held until 2006.

From 2009-2015, Shu was a distinguished visiting scholar at Academia Sinica's
Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics.
