Chiayi is cracking down on trouble-causing macaques.
The Forestry Bureau says there have been several recent reports of Formosan rock macaques harrassing visitors to the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area, by stealing food or engaging in threatening behavior.
The bureau says its data indicates that there are around 80 macaques living in the area, and it is stepping up measures to keep humans and monkeys separated.
Officials say staff, volunteers, and local residents have formed patrol teams, to discourage the macaques from approaching visitors, with use of non-lethal tools including paintball guns.
They are also reminding parkgoers to avoid contact with the animals, and seal all food items in plastic packaging.
