Taiwan Military: U.S. Volcano Sale to Include Only Anti-Tank Mines

The military today announced that only anti-tank munitions will be included
in the proposed purchase of Volcano mine-dispensing systems from the US.

The clarification comes after concerns were raised by opposition lawmakers
saying the arms sale could lead to a “landmine hell” similar to post-war
Cambodia.

The military emphasizes the metal-cased anti-vehicle mines cannot cannot be
accidentally triggered and would only be deployed in the event of war.

They also state the sale does not violate local and international laws that
prohibit the acquisition and use of anti-personnel mines.

The proposed $180 million US dollar arms deal, which has been approved by the
U.S. State Department, is expected to be confirmed by the U.S. Congress
within the next month.
