The Council of Agriculture has announced planned measures to assist muskmelon farmers struggling amid an outbreak of plant disease.
Agriculture Minister Chen Ji-zhong says if the damaged crop reaches over 20-percent, financial assistance programs will be initiated, and farmers will be encouraged to make use of agricultural insurance.
But for now, after personally inspecting affected farms down south, Chen says the problem is caused by the way fields are managed, and does not fit with eligibility for government assistance.
Chen says the council will however provide farms with help from experts, to alleviate the damage caused by plant diseases and unusual weather patterns.
