Taiwan New Cinema retrospective opens in New Taipei
Posted on 2022-10-08 15:38:13
A cinema retrospective has kicked off in New Taipei City, featuring dozens of
lesser-known movies made during the 1980s, as part of the Taiwan New Cinema
genre.

A total of 31 movies and short films, made in Taiwan from 1982 to 1987, a
period that was later characterized as the Taiwan New Cinema movement, are
selected at the retrospective, "Taiwan New Cinema: Revisited," and will be
screened at the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, or TFAI, through
November 27th.

The selection includes director Chang Yi's 1983 film "Kendo Kids", and
director Chen Kun-hou's 1985 romcom "My Favorite Season".

It also includes two internationally-acclaimed movies, namely Edward Yang's
"A Brighter Summer Day," with which the late director won Best Feature Film
at the 1991 Golden Horse Awards, as well Hou Hsiao-hsien's "Dust in the
Wind".

The TFAI President says the Taiwan New Cinema movement was a breakthrough in
the history of Taiwanese film because Taiwanese movies made during that
period were able to gain international recognition for the first time.
