Police say a recent investigation by the Criminal Investigation Bureau found that 242 Taiwanese with ties to criminal gangs were living in Cambodia and Myanmar who may have been involved in human trafficking operations that targeted Taiwanese.
National Police Agency Director-General Huang Ming-chao says the finding about the overseas Taiwanese led the police to believe that local gangs have been involved in human trafficking that have lured Taiwanese to Cambodia-based fraud rings.
The findings prompted the police to launch a nationwide operation against gangs from Aug. 20 to Sep. 2.
Huang says police rounded up 43 gang members who were involved locally in overseas human trafficking incidents.
In addition, 234 gang members from the Bamboo Union, the Tiendaomeng, and the Four Seas Gang were also arrested during the crackdown, which was also aimed at improving public security before the nationwide local elections in November and cracking down on illegal possession of firearms.
