Police in Taoyuan says Taiwan's last legal brothel recently closed its doors,
partly due to the impact of the domestic coronavirus outbreak.

The Tien-Tien-Le has long been Taiwan's last remaining legal brothel.

Taoyuan law enforcement authorities say the owner reported in March that the
brothel will close its doors on June 1, but has yet applied for the
withdrawal of its license.

If the owner fails to resume operations by July 1, the license will be
automatically revoked.

Local media reports say the coronavirus pandemic has led to a steady decline
in clients and the four registered sex workers employed by the Tien-Tien-Le
had decided to leave the brothel.

Reports say that the rise in illegal online prostitution in recent years has
also cut into the brothels business.

There were only four legal brothels in Taiwan at the beginning of 2018,
including the Tien-Tien-Le.

However, one in Taichung shut down voluntarily at the end of that same year,
one in Yilan forced to close by the government and one in Penghu that was
closed after its owner passed away.
