Sanlih Entertainment Television Chairman Lin Kun-hai has died.
He was 68.
The television company says Lin died of cancer at the Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital.
Lin was born in Kaohsiung in 1954 and was a taxi driver before opening a video rental store with his wife and brother-in-law in 1983.
He later established SET TV's predecessor, Sanlih Audio & Video before setting up several SET channels in 1993, when the local cable TV market opened up.
Lin ran as an independent in Kaohsiung in the 2001 legislative elections, but he leaned heavily toward the D-P-P in recent years.
And although Lin was not a member of the D-P-P, a faction he led within the party emerged as a new force in 2016 and later evolved to become the New Brave Foundation in 2020.
