Taiwanese-Singaporean Couple Wins Same-Sex Marriage Lawsuit

A Taiwanese national and her Singaporean partner have won a same-sex marriage lawsuit against Taipei's Songshan District Household Registration Office.
The ruling by the Taipei High Administrative Court states that the couple "be allowed to register their marriage."
And it overturns the household office's October 2019 decision to deny them the right to register the marriage.
The denial of registration rights was was based on a directive from the Ministry of the Interior that bans same-sex couples in which one of the partners is from a country or jurisdiction where gay marriage is illegal.
Singapore does not allow gay marriage.
But in overturning the ban, the administrative court said that marriage registration is "merely an administrative process" and is unaffected by the rules of other countries.
There have been numerous calls for the government to allow such marriages and the Taiwan Alliance to Promote Civil Partnership Rights says there are over 400 cross-national same-sex couples in Taiwan who are unable to get married due to the current directive.
