Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan is promising a thorough investigation into the death of a taxi driver earlier this week.
Cheng paid his respects at a ceremony earlier today, conveying his condolences to the family of the 56-year-old man, who was buried under a gravelslide on Tuesday.
The mayor says the company responsible for the gravel pit in Gui-shan District has been ordered to halt operations and fined $300-thousand NT.
The owner of the site has also been detained by the Taoyuan District Court, and is facing charges of negligence causing death.
Cheng is vowing to look into reports that the site has been repeatedly found to be in violation of government safety standards, and has promised clarity and justice for the victim's family.
