The General Chamber of Commerce is voicing its opposition to proposals to hike the minimum wage this year.
According to chamber chairman Paul Hsu, now is not the right time to consider raising the minimum wage, due to the local economic situation.
Hsu says although export-related businesses are doing well, local consumption has been negatively hit by the coronavirus outbreak, which has seen many service-sector companies registering declines in business of between 30 and 50-per cent.
The statement comes after Labor Minister Hsu Ming-chun expressed her hope that the basic wage could be increased by the end of this year, despite the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Basic Wage Review Committee is set to meet later next month.
