MOL and MOEA: Extending visa for migrant workers can be discussed
Posted on 2021-03-02 17:05:04
With the problem of labor shortage worsening, both Labor Minister and
Economics Minister have said that they're willing to consider extending
migrant workers' work permits.

Currently, Taiwan allows workers in industries to stay here for up to 12
years.

But the coronavirus pandemic has stopped many of them from entering or
returning to Taiwan, while the country's booming exportations mean companies
need more workers.

Labor Minister Xu Ming-chun says extending the work permit to 14 years is a
feasible option.

Economics Minister Wang Mei-hua agrees, saying that she would be happy to
discuss the issue with other relevant government agencies to try to reach a
consensus.

She also stresses that not all industries need experienced workers.
