Temperatures across Taiwan are expected to drop with the arrival of a cold front this afternoon, ending a spell of unseasonably warm weather that brought highs into the mid- to upper-20s this week.
The Central Weather Bureau said a southward-moving cold front today will bring the mercury down to around 15-17 degrees in northern and western Taiwan and 18-20 degrees in Hualien and Taitung on the east coast.
The weather bureau said that tomorrow, much of the country will see dry, cool and sunny weather, with high temperatures ranging from the upper teens to low 20s.
Meteorologists said the sunny and mild weather will extend into early next week, though large day-night temperature differences will continue to drive overnight lows down into the mid-teens.
The next cold front, which is expected to be slightly stronger, is expected to arrive in Taiwan next Thursday and Friday.
Meanwhile, Taiwan's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warned that as of 10 a.m. today, eight locations in Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County recorded air pollution levels reaching the red "unhealthy" level on its air quality index.
Pollution levels are expected to remain high overnight today, with the strengthening of northeasterly winds carrying offshore air pollution.
The EPA's air quality forecast for the coming days shows that pollution levels in Kaohsiung and Pingtung will remain in the red "unhealthy" level, while those in Yunlin, Chiayi and Tainan will be at the orange warning level, which means the air quality will be unhealthy for sensitive groups.
