Prague Mayor Explains Ditching Beijing for Taipei
Posted on 2020-01-14 19:13:13
Prague has terminated its sister city agreement with Beijing in favor of

Prague Mayor Zdenek Hrib says he scrapped the agreement because the Chinese
side showed "a lack of respect" to the city during talks over a "one-China
policy" clause in the deal.

Hrib says his government could not accept the clause in the sisterhood pact
because Prague wanted non-political partnerships with its sister cities.

He says in negotiations with Beijing on the possibility of removing the
clause, Hrib said the Chinese side did not show any respect to his city.

He says that not only did Beijing not answer the letters Prague sent on the
matter, it canceled a tour of China by Prague's Philharmonic Orchestra
scheduled for last September.

Taipei and Prague have now signed their sisterhood agreement, with both Hrib
and Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je signing it in Taiwan's capital.

Shanghai has cut off ties with Prague as a result.
