DPP Lawmakers Blocking Lining Up at Legislature Ahead of Gay Marriage Vote
Posted on 2019-05-16 12:28:13
Since early this morning, DPP lawmakers have been taking turns lining up in
front of the door to the legislative hall.

DPP Legislator Cheng Yun-peng says the reason is very simple: with the vote
on a same-sex marriage bill happening tomorrow, they want to ensure the
process runs smoothly without outside interference.

Cheng says the special bill on marriage equality is very important, and aside
from marriage registrations, certain areas need more work, like what the
relationship between same-sex couples will be called, their relationship with
children, and the name of the bill.

He says these issues need to meet the requirements as set out in the
Constitutional Court's interpretation that the civil code's ban on same-sex
marriage is unconstitutional, as well as recent referendums on the issue.

There is expected to be a lot of tension tomorrow as the bills go to the
vote, because ruling and opposition parties could not come to an agreement on
the 3 proposed same-sex marriage bills during an item-by-item reading on
Tuesday.
