Food company executives get heavier sentences at second trial

Two former Cheng Yi Foods executives and two suppliers have been handed
heavier sentences at a second trial after the Taiwan High Court rejected
their appeal against a lower court ruling.

Cheng Yi Foods is a subsidiary of Ding Hsin International Group and the
company was at the center of a tainted cooking oil scandal that came to light
in September of 2014.

The Gaoxiong branch of the Taiwan High Court has increased the prison
sentence of Cheng Yi's former president Ho Yu-ren from eight to 11 years on
charges of fraud and of violating the Act Governing Food Safety and

Supplier Lin Ming-chong, saw his sentence increased from four years and two
months to nine years and 10 months.

Former Cheng Yi purchasing department deputy manager, Hu Jin-min, was given
five years and six months, compared to four months in the first trial.

And Ho Wu Hui-zhu, another supplier to Cheng Yi, received a jail term of five
years and 10 months on charges of aggregated fraud, an increase of 10 months
on her first sentence of five years.

The court says heavier sentences were handed down to the four defendants on
the grounds that they "repeatedly" and "knowingly" made substandard oil
