Control Yuan reprimands MOJ for press freedom infringement
Posted on 2017-09-14 10:49:13
The Control Yuan has reprimanded the Ministry of Justice for abuse of power
and for infringing on press freedoms.

According to the Control Yuan, its investigations have found that some
ministry officials have used lie detectors and accessed journalists' phone
records to investigate members of the media.

The Control Yuan has instructed the Ministry of Justice to address the
problem and weed out officials who have abused their power.

The Agency Against Corruption is defending its officials from the
allegations, but says it will draft a law to define its duties and how its
officials should carry them out.

The president of the Association of Taiwan Journalists has said that
officials only have administrative investigative rights and should not abuse
their power by infringing on press freedom or accessing journalists' phone
