US Think Tank: Taiwan Elections Turning Point for Geopolitical Tensions

A US think tank believes that the upcoming election in Taiwan will prove to be a turning point for the island.
A report from the Asia Society Policy Institute titled "The 2024 Taiwanese Elections: A Primer" finds that even though presidential candidates appear to have significant differences, all advocate for maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, and for strengthening Taiwan's defense.
The report notes that the contenders, Lai Ching-te, Hou You-yi, Ko Wen-zhe, and independent candidate Terry Gou, have publicly stated that they would maintain the status quo, and that this was the only viable and safe option for preserving Taiwan's autonomy.
The ASPI author says the outcome of the election will ultimately reflect the fluid political preferences of Taiwan's people, highlighting the importance of addressing domestic issues.
The report also suggests that China is trying to influence public opinion and the outcome of the election, but any actions seen as intimidation of Taiwan could backfire.
