Hsinchu landfill fire may affect Taoyuan air quality

Officials say, a fire at Hsinchu County's Xin feng landfill may affect air
quality in the area and in Taoyuan.

The fire broke out early this morning, but was mostly extinguished, with
firefighters still working on some areas.

However, those that live downwind of the fire should be aware of potential
heavy smoke, that mat affect Xinfeng, Hukou in Hsinchu, and Taoyuan's
Yangmei.

Officials recommend residents of those areas to wear a mask and avoid outdoor
activity.

Data shows that the Xinfeng landfill has had over 80 fires in the past 5
years, most of which were caused by the spontaneous combustion of methane gas
from the trash.
