The Taichung City Government is fining a Wagyu beef restaurant 1.92 million NT and shutting it down for food fraud.
Food safety officials investigated the restaurant after receiving a tip and confirmed that not only had the restaurant been storing expired meat, it had also changed the expiration dates on the packaging.
The case has been transferred to the local prosecutor's office.
This comes after another high end Wagyu beef restaurant in Taichung's Xitun District was fined 1.44 million NT for storing expired meat.
Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen emphasized the importance of the whistleblower system, which led to the discovery of both cases, and which awards whistleblowers with half of the fine amount as a reward.
Mayor Lu said the government will establish a special task force to conduct targeted inspections of Wagyu beef restaurants in Taichung to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.
