A man who killed a cat by torturing it has been sentenced to a jail term of 7 months and a fine of 250-thousand NT.
According to the man's lawyer, it's the first time ever that a defendant would be imprisoned for causing the death of an animal due to abuse.
The New Taipei District Court's verdict says the man violated the Animal Protection Act by causing his girl friend's cat to "lose an important organ function" following disputes with her.
The sentence of 7 months can't be commuted to a fine, which means he has to serve the time.
Additionally, the man was also found guilty of embezzlement and two counts of intimidation for taking away the girlfriend's belongings and refusing to return them, for which he should serve an 8-month prison term.
