Animal Rights Groups Urge Regulation for Pigeon Racing Industry
Posted on 2023-07-13 14:08:13
Animal rights groups are calling for the government to impose more
regulations on pigeon racing.

The Taiwan Bird Rescue Association and Taiwan Animal Protection Monitor
Network issued a joint statement today, pointing out that there have been
several recent cases of offshore pigeon racing that have involved gambling,
violence, and even abductions of pigeons for ransom.

The organizations poin out that pigeons have an average lifespan of 15 years,
but offshore pigeon racing in Taiwan uses birds that are less than one year
old, subjecting them to races that cover up to 320 kilometers.

They say on average, less than 5-percent of the pigeons return after each
season's races.

The groups are emphasizing the need for the government to investigate and
regulate pigeon lofts.

The Council of Agriculture has responded by saying that a comprehensive
investigation is necessary.
