Taiwan's First Co-Ed Dorm
A dormitory (宿舍), or 'dorm' for short, is a type of housing where students
live when they go to university.
Students get their own beds, and share common areas (公共區域) like kitchens,
bathrooms, and living rooms.
It's a fun way to make friends and live close to where you study.
In Taiwan, dorms are separated by gender.
All male students would live in one building...
…and all female students would live in another building.
But there is one university that wants to try something different!
National Cheng-chi University (政治大學), or NCCU for short, has done
something super cool.
They've opened a co-ed dorm (男女混合宿舍) where boys and girls can live
together!
That's a first in Taiwan.
This new student dorm is in Taipei City's Muzha District, close to the NCCU
campus (校園).
It used to be staff housing a long time ago, but it has been given a major
makeover.
Now, it has everything students need: beds, desks, fridges, and even washing
machines.
Groups of students had to apply and then a lucky draw decided who got in
Each unit, or house, can fit up to 8 or 10 students, depending on the number
of bedrooms.
And it's super affordable!
Meanwhile, people in Taiwan seem to like this idea of boys and girls being
together.
Not just in dorms, but also in schools.
Many top high schools in Taiwan are boys' schools or girls' schools.
A big survey says that most Taiwanese people want to end separating boys and
girls in high schools.
People say high school is a crucial time (關鍵時期) for boys and girls to get
to know each other.
And they should be able to learn together.
The survey found that 80-percent of people encourage kids to not just stick
to old-fashioned ideas about what boys and girls should do.
In fact, nearly 70-percent agreed that times have changed.
The old way of putting boys first is fading away.

First Bob Ross Painting on Sale for Nearly 10 Million US Dollars
Have you heard of Bob Ross?
He was a super famous painter (畫家) with a TV show called "The Joy of
Painting."
He made painting fun and easy for everyone!
But guess what?
The very first painting he did on his show is now up for sale for $9.85
million US dollars.
That's almost $10 million dollars!
So, who's selling this painting?
A guy named Ryan Nelson owns an art gallery (藝術畫廊) in Minneapolis, a city
in the United States
He calls this painting, "A Walk in the Woods."
It's the first painting Bob Ross ever did for TV.
Nelson isn't in a hurry to sell it.
Nelson
He wants people to see it and get inspired to paint!
Bob Ross started his show in 1983, and he made it super chill and easy
He wore a cool beard and a perm.
And he showed people that anyone could paint, even without going to fancy art
schools.
His show was a big hit until he passed away in 1995.
Now, you might think $10 million US dollars is a lot for a painting.
And you'd be right!
No Bob Ross painting has ever been sold for that much money.
But Nelson believes this painting is extra special (非常特別) because it's
Bob Ross's first.
And it shows what he was all about-making art for regular people (普通人)
like you and me.
Would you like to see this expensive painting
Ryan Nelson hopes to show it in different museums so people can enjoy it.
Even if it's super costly (昂貴), the idea is to make art fun for everyone.

Words... Words... Words... Words... Words...
When you say one word over, and over, and over again, you might feel like the
word starts to sound pretty weird.
Even if you know what the word means... if you say it a hundred times, you
might feel like it loses meaning, and just becomes a sound.
In fact, researchers have found that after a person says a word just 30
times, they are slower to connect its meaning to other words.
Why does this happen...? Honestly... we still don't really know.
But try saying a word 100 times, and see how it feels!
Words... Words... Words... Words... Words...
If you have a fun fact, a joke, or news you'd like to share with us, record

Hi everyone! It's time for a new episode of News Bites...
I'm Brody Halverson.
And I'm Paz Bueno.
Today's stories...
A teen becomes Taiwan's Go champion, and two guys break the Great Wall of
China.
And in today's Tasty Tidbit…what is time?
Keep on listening to find out the answer!
Let's get into it.
________________________________
Teen Becomes Go Champion of Taiwan
Do you like to play go (圍棋)?
It's a fun board game for two players.
One player has black stones (黑子), and the other player has white stones
They take turns placing stones on the game board (棋盤)
Each player tries to surround (包圍) the other player's stones to control the
board.
Sounds simple, right?
Well, the rules may be simple....
...but the game can be really hard.
Most players need to study for many years before they can play the
professionals.
But these days, young players (年輕棋手) are changing the game.
Just ask sixteen-year-old Lin Yi-ting (林怡廷).
Even though she's still in high school....
...she won this year's Synmosa Cup Woman Ace Player Tournament
This tournament in Taipei is the top event for female Go players in Taiwan.
And Lin is the youngest champion in the tournament's history.
How did she do it?
Lin says she used to spend all her time practicing.
Every day she went to train (訓練) with her coach (教練).
After that, she would go home, and train by herself.
But, Lin was working too hard.
Then, at the beginning of this year, something bad happened.
She lost ten games in a row.
So Lin decided to take a new approach.
After training each day, she would go home and focus on other things.
That let her mind relax.
With her new mindset (新的態度), Lin says it became easier to play go.
The game became fun again.
Besides, she has another advantage (優勢).
Lin uses new AI technology to train.
This technology is changing the way people play go.
AI can suggest moves that a human would never think of.
What's more, young players are learning the most from AI.
These advantages helped Lin in the tournament.
When she made it to the championship game (冠軍賽), she didn't feel too much
stress.
Plus, she had some new moves she learned from AI.
That let her beat (擊敗) a professional player.
Lin won the game only half a point to become Taiwan's champion.
She took home the trophy (獎杯), and 500,000 NT in prize money (獎金).
Way to go, Lin!

Two Men Dig Shortcut through Great Wall of China
Have you ever been to the Great Wall of China
It's the longest wall (城牆) in the world.
The wall is more than 20,000 kilometers long.
It is made of dirt and stone, and many workers spent their lives building it.
For thousands of years, the wall has protected (保護) China.
But recently, someone broke a hole (挖破了一個洞) in the wall.
What? Who broke the Great Wall of China?
Was it Genghis Khan?
Don't be ridiculous.
Genghis Khan has been dead for centuries.
Actually, the wall was broken by two local guys
It happened to a part of the wall in Shanxi province (山西省).
Recently, police found a big hole in the wall.
The hole had a new dirt road running through it.
Police saw someone had used an excavator (怪手) to make the hole.
Finally, they found the two guys that did it.
The guys said they wanted to make a shortcut (捷徑).
They said it took too much time to travel around the wall.
Unfortunately, those guys did not think about what they were destroying
The part of the wall they knocked down goes back to the Ming dynasty.
That means it's more than 400 years old.
What's more, experts (專家) say there is no way to fix the wall.
That part of the wall was important for historians
Plus, tourists (觀光客) used to visit that wall.
Now, it is destroyed forever.
Fortunately, there are still many other sections of the Great Wall.
Still, this strange story has made people think about how to preserve
historical sites (如何保存歷史遺跡).
In the past, the wall protected the people of China.
But these days, people in China need to protect the wall!

Do you know what time it is? Of course you do! That's because we have clocks,
all over the place.
But when was the first clock invented?
Around the year 1300, people made something called an "hourglass". Sand falls
slowly from the top of the hourglass to its bottom, to show how much time has
passed.
But that's not really a clock.
Even before 1300, we had mechanical clocks, in tall towers that could ring a
bell at certain times of day.
That's a little closer...
But thousands of years before all these inventions, humans could take a long
stick... and put it in the ground, sticking up to the sky. And as the sun
moved, people could know what time it was, by looking at the stick's shadow!
So, yeah... I guess our first clock has always been the sun!

Mobile Movie Theater Travels Hualien
Catching a movie is a fun way to enjoy a day off.
But what if you don't live close to a movie theater?
Hualien County is running a mobile movie truck!
It's called the "Hua Tie Hao" (花鐵號).
The truck has a big 150-inch LED screen on the side.
It also has a sound system that's as good as systems in movie theaters!
The Hualien County government bought and set up two trucks using $5.2 million
NT from the Ministry of Culture.
The second truck is used to carry workers and equipment for the Hua Tie Hao.
The truck started showing movies outdoors during the Mid-Autumn Festival long
weekend.
The Hua Tie Hao parked at a plaza next to a market.
It showed the movie "Cheerful Wind", made in 1982 by director Hou Hsiao-hsien.
And there was even pizza, popcorn, and other snacks for people to enjoy.
Officials say later the Hua Tie Hao will also travel to elementary schools
and community centers to show movies.
Their goal is to show at least one movie in every township and city in the
county within one year.
People can also request a showing in their area.
The county government says Hualien is a big county, and most movie theaters
are in Hualien City.
It says some people in faraway areas have to drive almost an hour to see a
movie.
The county government hopes the Hua Tie Hao can help people living all over
the county enjoy watching films.

Grazing Goats Help Fight California Wildfires
California has struggled with wildfires for many years.
The US state has dry, windy and hot weather.
And changes in the state are making wildfires more frequent and more
dangerous.
But the state has also been working with a new secret weapon.
A different kind of hero...
A hero with strong muscular legs...
And a big appetite (胃口)...
You guessed it, goats!
California is hiring herds of goats to help it fight wildfires.
The goats help by doing something they love...eating!
Workers bring hundreds of goats to areas full of grass, shrubs (灌木), and
plants.
Many of these places are on rocky hills.
It's hard for people and machines to get to these places.
But the terrain (地形) is no problem for goats!
They quickly get to work, eating up the plants.
The goats can eat a lot of plants.
They eat weeds, bushes, low leaves, and dry shrubs.
These are all plants that burn in wildfires.
To fight wildfires, California has asked people to cut down dead plants and
mow their grass (割草).
These are all things that goats do, easily and naturally.
The experts also say the goats have the "right mouths".
Their mouths are narrow and deep
This helps them eat woody plants that other animals may find too tough (堅硬)
to eat.
And they can stand up on their hind legs (後肢) to eat shrubs up to 2 meters
high.
And officials say using goats also help California save money.
To clear dead plants from one square meter of land, people and machines would
cost about $3,000 US dollars.
But using goats would cost about $1,000 US dollars.
Many cities in California are now using goats to clear dead plants.
And many say it's a more natural and safe way to fight wildfires.

Taiwanese Movies Shine Bright in Hawaii
Two movies from Taiwan have been picked for special awards
at a big movie festival in Hawaii.
The festival is called the 43rd Hawaii International Film Festival
The movies are "Be With Me" (車頂上的玄天上帝) and "A Girl Out of the
Country" (鳳姐).
"Be With Me" is up for the Kau Ka Hoku Award.
'Kau ka hoku' means shooting star (流星).
This award is for new movie makers who made their first or second movie.
This movie has Ariel Lin (林依晨) as its main star.
The story is about a woman who goes back to Chiayi County.
She goes to take care of her sick dad.
And a special god helps her make choices.
"A Girl Out of the Country" is nominated (被提名) for another award.
This award is called the NETPAC Award
It is given out at many international film festivals for movies from Asia and
the Pacific area.
Hawaii is the only place in the U.S. that gives this award.
"A Girl Out of the Country" is about a woman who wants to be famous.
But something very sad happens to her.
The Hawaii festival started on October 11th and will end on November 5th.
They will say who wins the awards on Sunday, October 22nd.
There are more movies from Taiwan that will be shown at the festival.
These include "Day Off" (本日公休) and "My Heavenly City" (我的天堂城市).
These movies are part of a special "Spotlight on Taiwan" section.
This section is put together by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture (文化部) and the
Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles
So, Taiwanese movies are getting a lot of attention in Hawaii.
It's exciting to see how our movies are liked in other parts of the world!

Footprints Show People Lived in America Way Earlier
Footprints (足跡) can tell us a lot of information.
They can show us how tall or heavy a person might be, or how long ago they
were made.
And new footprint findings (新的足跡發現) have made scientists think again
about when people first lived in America (美洲).
In 2021, researchers found very old human footprints in a place called White
Sands National Park in the US State of New Mexico
Before this, people thought humans migrated to America about 15,000 years ago.
They said people might've traveled through a land bridge between Russia and
Alaska.
But new tests showed the White Sands footprints are probably 21,000 to 23,000
years old!
That means humans were living in America 6,000 years earlier than they
thought!
How did scientists find out how old these footprints are?
At first, they looked at seeds (種子) from water plants that were stuck to
the footprints.
They used something called "radiocarbon dating" (放射性碳定年法) to find out
the age.
Some scientists didn't believe this method.
They said the seeds might have absorbed (吸收) old stuff from the lake,
making them look older than they are.
So, researchers did another study.
This time, they checked the age of pollen from pine trees (松樹花粉) and tiny
pieces of quartz (石英) that were found near the footprints.
And these new tests showed the footprints are probably 21,000 to 23,000 years
old!
These footprints are like a quick look into the past.
They can tell us how people or animals walked and if their paths crossed
Other old sites in America have also been found, but it was hard to prove
people lived there.
The footprints at White Sands show people definitely lived there a very long
time ago!

Have you ever seen an owl? HOO HOO
Owls can see very well, even in the dark. But... owls don't have eyeballs!
Their eyes are shaped like cylinders, or rods... so they're more like "eye

So, because they can't move their eyes to look around, like other animals
do... they have to turn their whole head!
And that's not the only bird with weird eyes... an ostrich's eye is bigger

Comic Book Takes You on a Journey in 1990s Taiwan
A comic is a type of story that uses words and illustrations (插圖).
In a comic book, each page is divided into panels that show different scenes.
It's kind of like watching a movie, but in book form!
A famous comic book artist from America named Mark Crilley made a new book
called "Lost in Taiwan."
The book is a fun story about an American high school student who gets lost
(迷路) in Taiwan during the 1990s!
Why did Mark write about Taiwan?
Well, he lived here over 30 years ago and taught English!
Mark says the book is like a "love letter to Taiwan."
Mark
He hopes people around the world will learn about Taiwan's culture through
his book.
Mark is from a city in America called Detroit.
He became famous (有名的) for his books like "Akiko" and "Mastering Manga."
He first came to Taiwan in 1988 and worked as an English teacher in Changhua
County.
He was only 21 years old and knew very little Chinese.
But he fell in love with Taiwan-especially the yummy food and the colorful
signs everywhere!
While living here, Mark liked to draw a lot.
He drew temples, motorcycles, and even scenes from everyday life in Taiwan
He says many memories from that time are still clear in his mind.
Mark's new book is not about his own life, but it's a fun story that was
inspired (啟發) by his time in Taiwan.
The hero in the book also learns about Taiwanese culture, makes new friends,
and even starts learning the language, just like Mark did.
So why did he write this book?
Mark thinks people often talk only about big Asian countries like China and
Japan.
He hopes his book will make more people interested in Taiwan!
It took Mark about a year to finish "Lost in Taiwan," and he dedicated it
(把它獻給) to the friendly people of Taiwan.
So, if you like comic books, check out "Lost in Taiwan."

Scientists Study Dust from a Faraway Asteroid
Scientists have always wondered about how life got started on Earth.
Some scientists think that a long, long time ago, asteroids (小行星) might
have helped make life on Earth possible!
These big rocks in space could have brought important stuff like water and
special minerals to our planet.
This could have helped kick-start (啟動) life around 4.5 billion years ago.
To find out if this is true, scientists from NASA decided to launch an
asteroid mission.
In 2016, a spaceship (太空船) called OSIRIS-REx went on a super long trip to
an asteroid named Bennu.
This asteroid is really, really far from Earth-205 million miles away
It took three years for the spaceship to reach Bennu.
Then, for the next two years, OSIRIS-REx studied the asteroid to find a
suitable landing site (找到一個合適的著陸地點).
In 2020, the spacecraft landed on Bennu and collected a sample
It took three years on its journey back, and finally returned in September!
It brought back dust (塵埃) from the asteroid.
Scientists were super excited to look at this space rock dust for the first
time.
They used special tools like big microscopes and X-ray machines to see what
the dust is made of.
And they found the asteroid dust has lots of carbon (碳) and clay minerals
that hold water (能吸水的黏土礦物質).
They think this is a big discovery!
Asteroids like Bennu might have brought important stuff to Earth a long time
ago, like water.
Water makes Earth a place where we can live, have oceans, and see rain.
Maybe rocks like the ones from Bennu helped make Earth a home for us all
those years ago!
NASA will share some of the space dust with more scientists.
But most of it-about 75%-will be kept safe for future scientists to study.
Hopefully they'll be able to learn more cool things about it!

WAIT! Don't look at the sun, that's bad for your eyes!
But, according to research, when some people want to sneeze, bright lights
can help it come out faster.
That's around 10% to 35% of people! Scientists say the part of our brain that
makes us sneeze, may be close to the part that feels light.
Just be careful not to hurt your eyes!
