Hello everybody, and welcome to a new episode of News Bites!
I'm Trevor Tortomasi...
And I'm Paz Bueno.
In today's news:
A woman brushes her teeth a little too far, scientists try a new way to fly
rockets, and the world's oldest dog has a small celebration.
All that and more, coming up next.

Woman Swallows a Toothbrush
In English, there is a saying (說法) that some people "bite off more than
they can chew".
If you bite off (咬掉) more than you can chew (咀嚼), that means you try to
do too much, and can't finish it, or can't do it right.
Well, one woman in Taiwan might have swallowed (吞下) more than she could
bite...
This woman in Pingtung woke up one day recently still feeling very sleepy,
and went to brush her teeth (刷牙) in the bathroom.
But she was so sleepy, that without realizing it (不知不覺的)...
She accidentally swallowed the whole toothbrush!
She quickly went to the hospital, and told a nurse (護士) what happened.
But the nurse had to ask the woman to repeat herself a few times, because she
couldn't believe it had actually happened.
Doctors came to give the woman an endoscopy (內視鏡檢查), which is when they
send a tiny camera to look inside a person's body.
And there it was... the whole toothbrush!
The woman says she felt some chest pain (胸痛), but after they got the
toothbrush out, doctors said she was completely fine.
Of course, they agreed to keep her name a secret, because she felt very
So, even though you should brush your teeth every day...
Just remember not to brush your stomach!

NASA to Test Satellite Slingshot Technology
More and more rockets are flying into outer space each year.
That's great news for science!
But Earth's gravity (地心引力) is very strong, so each rocket needs a LOT of
fuel (燃料) to get up there.
And burning (燃燒) lots of fuel can be very expensive.
It's also pretty bad for the environment.
So, scientists have been looking for new ways to get into space.
And one new idea (主義) might be ready soon!
A company called "SpinLaunch" has been working for years, to create a special
machine (機器).
This giant machine spins a small rocket around inside of it very, very
quickly, and then lets the rocket go, to launch the rocket up into space.
The machine is 50 meters tall (五十公尺高), and can spin rockets as fast as
8,000 kilometers per hour (時速八千公里).
That's more than 6 times faster than the speed of sound
Of course, with a machine that moves this quickly, we can't put people inside
the rocket.
But scientists plan to use SpinLaunch to send things like satellites (衛星)
into space.
And they hope using this technology (科技) can make launching rockets easier
and better for the environment.
Let's just hope it works!

World's Oldest Dog Celebrates New Record
Have you ever met a dog who is older than you are?
If you're 10 years old, you have probably seen dogs older than you.
But if you're 20 years old, you might never have the chance (機會).
That is, unless you meet "TobyKeith", the world's oldest dog!
TobyKeith is a 21-year-old chihuahua (吉娃娃), who lives in the U.S.
He was born in the year 2001, and has recently been recognized by Guinness
World Records, as the world's oldest dog.
His family helped him celebrate with a nice bath, a fun car ride, and a cake
made for dogs!
But there was once an even older dog, many years ago...
In the year 1939, a dog in Australia named "Bluey" reached the old, old age
of 29 years old.
Bluey is still listed as the oldest dog in history
So, if you ever meet an animal older than you...
Make sure you give it your respect (尊敬)!

Tainan's "Pink Pond"
Picture a beautiful pond (池塘) in your head.
What color is the water?
Is it blue or green?
How about the color pink?
There is a pond in Tainan that is becoming famous... because it is pink!
The pond is in Tainan's Qigu District (七股).
It is actually a fish pond (魚塭).
And the water in the pond is pink, because of the photosynthetic bacteria
Many fish farmers grow this bacteria in their ponds.
The bacteria helps keep fish, shrimp, and other animals in the pond healthy.
And this bacteria is pink.
So a little photosynthetic bacteria makes the water light pink.
And a lot of the bacteria makes the water a bright pink.
The pond in Tainan has a lot of the special bacteria.
So it is a bright pink color.
Some people have said the pond looks like a strawberry milkshake
But if you want to go take pictures, you have to ask the owner of the fish
pond first.
There are other "pink ponds" in Taiwan.
Fish ponds near Kinmen County's Ci Lake (金門慈湖) are also pink.
And Lake Hillier, in Australia, is one of the most famous pink lakes in the
world.
Lake Hillier is bright pink.
It is surrounded by green plants.
And it is right next to the ocean.
So many people enjoy the colors of the bright pink lake, bright green plants,
and bright blue ocean, all together.

Japanese Chopsticks Make Food Taste More Salty
Sometimes, a salty snack just tastes so good.
Our bodies need a little salt (鹽份) to stay healthy.
But lots of foods we eat now have too much salt.
And too much salt can be bad for you.
You might feel very thirsty, or weak (虛弱).
And too much salt can lead to high blood pressure (高血壓), and even heart
Now scientists in Japan may have a way for us to enjoy salty foods without
hurting our bodies.
It's a pair of chopsticks (筷子).
But they aren't just normal chopsticks.
These chopsticks can make food taste 1.5 times more salty.
With these chopsticks, people can use less salt, and still enjoy the taste of
their food.
How do they do this?
The chopsticks come with a mini-computer.
The eater wears the mini-computer on their wrist.
And a tiny bit of electricity goes through the chopsticks.
The electricity does not hurt the person at all.
Together, the mini-computer and electricity make the person taste saltiness
in their mouth.
So there might be only a little salt in the dish.
But the eater will taste a lot of saltiness.
Scientists say the chopsticks may go on sale next year.

And the last time he watched it was on March 15th, 2022.
He spent 720 hours watching the movie!
For the first few weeks, he would watch the movie five times a day.
And he spent about $100,000 NT buying tickets to watch the movie.
He watched the movie so many times that he set a new world record!
Ramiro says he's watched "Spider-Man: No Way Home" so many times, that he
remembers everything everyone said in the movie.
Ramiro also set a world record in 2019, after watching "Avengers: Endgame"

Special License Plates Sell for Top Dollar
Sometimes, some numbers together can have a special meaning.
And sometimes, that's worth a lot of money.
Last month, some special license plate numbers (車牌號碼) sold for a lot of
money.
License plates are the signs on the back of cars.
In Taiwan, license plates have three letters, and four numbers.
Usually, people cannot choose license plate numbers.
But the government lets people try to buy some special license plate numbers.
Some people think these numbers are fun, or will give them good luck.
"8888" is the most popular, because it sounds like "get rich" (發) in
Mandarin.
In fact, the government says BQQ-8888 was sold for $300,000 NT last month.
Some people also like "6" because it sounds like "things going smoothly".
And "520" is popular too, because it sounds like "I love you" in Mandarin.
The license plate number BMW-0520 was sold for $110,000 NT in February.
And the three letters on the license place are important too.
"VVV" is one of the most popular combinations (組合).
In some countries around the world "V" can mean victory.
Back in 2019, the license plate number "VVV-8888" sold for $881,000 NT.
But another license plate sold for even more money.
In 2011, "88-8888" sold for $3,589,000 NT!

Growing Meat in Space
Scientists have been growing plants in space for many years.
And now, they want to try to "grow" meat!
New tests to try to grow meat in space started last month.
Astronauts flew up to the International Space Station.
They took a small box with them.
Inside the box, were animal cells
The plan is to give those cells nutrients (養分) they need to grow.
Then, these cells grow and make more cells, until they become muscle (肌肉).
And this becomes meat that we can eat.
Some people are excited about this way of "growing" meat.
They think it means we won't have to hurt animals to get meat anymore.
And they think we won't have to use so much water and electricity to raise
(養) these animals.
Some scientists also think "growing" meat will help people live on other
planets (星球) in the future.
But for now, they will first try to grow the meat on the International Space
Station.
The scientists aren't sure if the meat will grow the same way in space.
Many things like light, air and gravity (地心引力) are different from on
Earth.
And some other problems have to be worked out (解決) too.
But if these problems can be solved, "growing" meat might lead to a big
change for everyone!

Millipede Named After Taylor Swift
American singer Taylor Swift has won many awards.
But she's never had an honor (榮譽) like this.
A scientist has found a new species of millipede (馬陸).
And he's named it after Taylor.
The Nannaria swiftae, or Swift twisted-claw millipede was found in the U.S.
state of Tennessee.
It is brown, with reddish spots on the sides.
The scientist that found this millipede says he is a Swiftie.
That's what some Taylor Swift fans call themselves.
Taylor's music helped him get through hard times.
And he wants to thank her, by naming the millipede after her.
The scientist says he hopes she is happy about this.
He also points out that millipedes are very important for the environment.
They eat dead plants, and help make the soil better for living plants.

Solar Panels Installed at Dog Shelter
In order to do lots of things, we need to use energy (能量).
But the energy we use has to come from energy sources (能量源).
Our bodies use food and water to make energy, and lots of cars use oil (汽油).
But sometimes, when we use a lot of these resources (資源), it can be bad for
the environment (環境).
And if we use too much of those resources, there might not be any left.
Fortunately, there are many other sources of energy... like the sun!
In recent years, more and more people have been using solar energy (太陽能).
That's because no matter how much sunlight we use, there will always be more!
And one place in Taiwan has been using solar energy to care for animals.
It's an animal shelter (動物收容所) in Taipei City's Zhonghe District.
The animal shelter has installed solar panels on almost 1,000 square meters
of its roof.
The panels take solar energy and make it into electricity (發電).
The new power has helped the shelter to save money (省錢)... enough money to
buy 840 kilograms of dog food!
It has also cut down the shelter's carbon emissions by the same amount as
3,000 trees.
Not only can solar panels help the animals in our cities.
They can also help the nature around us stay cleaner, too!

World's Oldest Person Passes Away
How old is the oldest person you know?
Maybe you have a family member (親戚) who is one hundred years old.
Nowadays, more and more people are living even longer than one hundred years!
It's still very rare, but medical technology and medicine are getting better
and better every year.
That means people are staying healthier as they get older, and they are
living longer.
But, of course, no one lives forever...
First, the bad news: The world's oldest person has just passed away (去世).
Her name was Kane Tanaka, and she was 119 years old.
But now, the good news: She lived a long and amazing life.
Kane Tanaka (田中加子) was born in Japan in 1903, as the seventh child
(第七個孩子) in a family of nine children.
She got married (結婚了) one hundred years ago, and had four children.
During her life, she ran various businesses (她做過好幾種生意), and even
opened a noodle shop!
Now, after Tanaka's passing, the world's oldest person is a French nun, who
is 118 years old.
And French people must be doing something right, because the oldest person in
history was also French...
Her name was Jeanne-Louise Calment, and she passed away at the old, old age
of 122.
We'll still miss these people after they're gone, but we can still celebrate
(慶祝) their long lives.
Just remember to exercise and eat healthy foods, and you might live even
longer!

Elon Musk Buys Twitter
Since the year 2006, Twitter (推特) has been a place for people to share
their thoughts online (在網路上).
It started as just a website (網站), and years later, it became one of the
most popular apps in the world.
But it has gone through a lot of changes in these years.
And one person, Elon Musk (伊隆·馬斯克), thinks he can change it even more.
Mr. Musk is currently the world's richest person (世界上最有錢的人), and is
planning to buy the entire Twitter company (公司).
But buying a company this big isn't as simple as buying food at the store...
It's going to cost him about $44 billion U.S. dollars
And on top of that (更何況), he'll need to get enough money in one place to
make the purchase (購買).
Mr. Musk also owns Tesla and SpaceX, and he'll have to use pieces of these
companies to pay for Twitter.
People are still wondering what he'll do with Twitter once he gets it, but
for now, we'll wait and see...
Just don't worry if it all sounds complicated (複雜)... that's because it is!

Glove puppetry made from sand
What do Taiwanese glove puppetry and sand have in common?
They will both be features (特點) in the 2022 Fulong International Sand
Sculpture Arts Festival in New Taipei City!
The feature for the event will be sculptures made out of sand.
A total of 36 sand sculptures (沙雕) will be displayed on weekends from May
26th to October 10th.
They are made by mixing water and sand, then piled into wooden forms to make
the shape.
Then, it is pressed together to make the base so that the artist can continue
making their sculpture.
The main highlight (主要亮點) will be an eight-meter-tall sand statue of Su
Huan-jen, the main character of Pili.
Pili is one of Taiwan's best known glove puppetry shows (布袋戲)。
The TV series debuted in 1984, and it still continues today.
It is one of the most popular TV shows in Taiwan.
Unlike traditional puppet shows, Pili uses computers to make the action
There will also be sculptures of Su in different disguises (裝扮), and many
other Pili characters, too.
During the event, visitors will also have a chance to meet with the actors
behind these fictional characters (虛構人物) and take part in other
activities.
Visitors can enjoy concerts (演唱會),
eat food and buy souvenirs (伴手禮) at a market,
and experience workshops (工作坊) to try their hand at making sand sculptures.

The sun disrupts our radio signals.
A sunspot (太陽黑子) threw off a double solar flare on April 25th, causing
some radios to stop working in Asia and Australia.
Sunspots are areas that appear dark on the surface of the Sun.
They appear dark because they are cooler than other parts of the Sun's
surface.
Solar flares are a sudden explosion of energy caused by magnetic field lines
near sunspots.
Scientists called the Sunspot AR2993.
The sunspot AR2993 erupted (爆發) with two flares very quickly.
And the magnetic wave (磁波) was strong enough to stop radios on Earth.
They say it's "medium-sized", but it is actually hundreds of millions of
kilometers big.
Earth would sit in the active region as comfortably as an egg in a nest.
Solar flares not only cause disruption (中斷) on our radio signals,
But they also light up the night sky in the North and South Pole, making
beautiful auroras (極光) that we can see.

Eating meat grown in a lab is good for the planet - and your health!
Eating meat grown in labs or ground up insects (磨碎的昆蟲) could help the
environment, reduce carbon emissions, and use less water.
Researchers say these kinds of foods could cut pollution (污染) on the planet
by 80%.
But it's not clear if people want to eat bugs or meat grown in labs.
Scientists are trying to figure out another way to grow food so that it has
more protein (蛋白質) while using less land and water.
The researchers looked at the nutrition of some of those products and three
types of environmental pressure: water use, land use, and carbon emissions
Alternative foods can reduce these impacts by 80-percent while providing more
nutrients (營養素) than a vegan or a vegetarian diet.
New foods include ground up flies and crickets, eggs made in the lab from
chicken cells(細胞), and seaweed and mushrooms.
A professor from Cambridge thinks it may be better, but changing people's
diets will be hard.
Many studies have shown that eating a plant-based diet (植物性飲食) is good
for you and the environment.
So make sure to eat more vegetables every day!
