News Bites 國中 | Posted on 2019-09-11 | ![]() |
Hi and welcome to News Bites!
I'm Philip Brossard, and I'm Eric Gau!
Today we have an exciting story about how Taiwan is moving forward with
making electric buses that don't need any drivers.
We hear about how China now has its first high-level Catholic teacher with
approval from the pope.
And we learn about a new app that will make it even easier to ride Taiwan's
buses that run from city to city.
---------------------------------------------
MOEA Unveils Driverless Electric Minibus 經濟部推出無人駕駛電動公車
The Ministry of Economic Affairs 經濟部 has unveiled 推出 a new kind of bus.
An economy is the total of all business done in a certain place.
A veil is a piece of cloth that hangs over the face, so to unveil means to
remove the veil from something.
The new bus is Taiwan's first domestically 國內 made driverless 無人駕駛
electric minibus.
"Domestic" actually means "home" in English, so here it means made in the
country and not in another country.
The new vehicle is called the "WinBus."
It is equipped with three positioning systems 定位系統 to find the best route.
A position is a location, but here it is used as a verb.
According to the government, the "WinBus" is scheduled for mass production
大量生產 in 2021.
The self-driving 自動駕駛 minibus can carry six passengers and the government
hopes to begin exporting it to overseas markets.
The "WinBus" is scheduled to undergo a trial 試辦 before the end of this year.

First Chinese Bishop Consecrated with Pope's OK 教宗首次任命中國的主教
China has its first official Catholic bishop 主教.
A bishop is a high-level person in the Christian church.
The Chinese bishop was consecrated 任命 with the approval of Pope Francis.
"To consecrate" here means to give a person the duties that come with being a
bishop.
This is the first time the pope 教宗 has consecrated a Chinese bishop since
the Vatican 梵蒂岡 and China signed an important deal last year.
The Vatican is where the head of the Catholic Church lives and does most of
his duties.
The Vatican hoped the deal would end years of tension with China and bring
all of China's Catholics together.
--------------------------------------
Bus Services Launching New App 客運公司合作出APP
Taiwan's long-haul bus operators are teaming up to improve business.
Passenger numbers on commuter buses have dropped by about 10 percent in
recent years, as train and high speed rail services become more popular.
Commuter buses, 客運, are buses that operate longer routes, usually between
different cities, and have to travel on highways.
To drum up more riders, the country's four major bus operators have jointly
launched a new app that will let passengers buy their tickets online.
The app also allows users to share tickets with family members, and will have
a search function for the closest station.
The app is undergoing testing with the Taipei Bus Depot, and 13 more major
stations will be added before the end of the year.
Incentives will be offered for passengers to start using the app during the
first several months.
----------------------------------------
And now to look back at what we learned today!
First, Taiwan's government has unveiled 推出 its new self-driving 自動駕駛
bus.
"To unveil" means to remove a piece of cloth that covers someone's face, but
here it means to show for the first time.
The bus is Taiwan's first driverless 無人駕駛 minibus made domestically 國內.
"Domestic" means "home," or here in the country.
The government says it will start mass production 大量生產 in two years.

the two sides reached an agreement.

---------------------------------------
And there's a new app to make it easier to take buses between Taiwan's cities.
Four of the country's major bus operators made the app so people could buy
tickets for the buses online.
These commuter buses 客運 have been losing business as Taiwan's trains become
more convenient.
A commuter bus is a bus that takes longer trips than city buses, usually
between cities.
The companies hope the new app will help them make more money.
And that's it for today's edition of News Bites!
