Taiwan Shines at Madrid LGBTQ Film Festival
Movies can tell many kinds of stories.
Some make us laugh, some make us think, and some help us understand people
who are different from us.
Inclusive movies (包容性的電影) are very important because they show voices
and experiences we don't always see.
These stories remind us (提醒我們) that everyone is important.
It can help us be kinder (更友善) and more understanding (更懂得體諒他人).
This year, Taiwan shared its stories at LesGaiCineMad, the Madrid
International LGBTQ Film Festival.
The event featured Taiwan as the theme country (以台灣為主題) with a special
"Taiwan Queer Film Series" (台灣酷兒電影專題).
The series included nine Taiwanese films, such as "The Wedding Banquet"
(囍宴), "Small Talk" (日常對話), and "Who'll Stop the Rain" (青春並不溫柔).
Most screenings were full (幾乎每場都座無虛席), showing how excited people
were to see these films.
This festival is the biggest LGBTQ film event in the Spanish-speaking world
It supports equality (平等) and cultural exchange (文化交流).
Taiwan's movies selection focused on freedom, family, and modern life.
Half of the films were directed by women.
By being featured at LesGaiCineMad, Taiwan shared its culture and values.
It built connections and celebrated progress in human rights and film.

Giant Coral Found-it's Visible from Space!
Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are often called the "rainforests of the sea."
They are full of life, home to colorful fish, crabs (螃蟹), and shrimp (蝦).
Scientists found the world's largest coral in the Pacific Ocean near the
Solomon Islands.
The coral is over 30 meters long and more than 300 years old.
It is so big that it can be seen from space!
This coral is three times larger than the previous record-holder
It is even longer than a blue whale (藍鯨), the biggest animal on Earth.
Unlike a reef made of many colonies, this coral is one single organism.
The coral is full of life.
Many fish, crabs, and shrimp live there.
Up close, it is colorful with purples, yellows, blues, and reds.
Corals are very important.
They provide food and shelter for ocean animals, and also protect coastlines
from storms.
But corals are in danger.
Pollution, overfishing, and climate change are big problems.
Rising ocean temperatures have killed many corals.
This coral is still alive after 300 years, giving hope for coral reefs.
Scientists say it shows that some corals can survive tough conditions.
But they warn that urgent action is needed to protect corals.
The Solomon Islands hope this discovery will bring more attention and funding
to help protect corals.

Tasty Tidbit
Sundogs (幻日) are bright spots that can appear on either side of the sun.
It makes it look like there's more than one sun in the sky!
They happen when sunlight passes through ice crystals in the sky.
These crystals act like tiny mirrors, bending the light and creating glowing
spots.
Have you ever seen one?

Local Political Groups Call for More Female Representation in Local Politics
Local political groups want there to be more women in politics.
Right now, there is a law that says that when the number of politicians in
some places is four or more, one seat needs to be for a woman politician.
So if there's four seats, then one or more will be a woman, right?
Right! But, if there's seven people, only one of them needs to be a woman.
So these local groups think that the law should be changed to have more
women's seats in local governments.
By how much?
They want it to change from one fourth (四分之一) to one third
The groups asked the government to write an amendment (修正案) to have more
opportunities for women to hold office.
They also want to have more women in politics in rural areas.
In recent years, women made up about one third of county and city councilors
(縣市議員) , but only about one fourth of township representatives
(鄉鎮市民代表), including towns, cities, and districts.
The law that women's groups want to change hasn't been changed since 1999!
By the way- this problem is worse in the rural areas of Taiwan.
In urban areas(市區), there are more female representatives than in rural
areas(鄉下).
But wait… Taiwan's last president, Tsai Ing-Wen is a woman! It is really
that bad for female politicians
Well, these women's groups say that the problem is worse for lower level
governments positions- like your city and township representatives.
Even though other countries think Taiwan does a good job of having female
politicians, there are less women in lower positions.
Female politicians might have to choose between family and career. Male
politicians may not have the same problems.
Uh… what do you mean?
Well, moms are often expected to do more work to raise kids. So if a mom also
has a job on top of having kids, she might have to do more work at home while
she also has a job.
So does that mean that some women will choose to either have kids or have a
career?
It might be too much to do both.
Plus, it is hard to change society's views to make it easier for women to be
in politics. Sometimes there is a stigma (污名) that makes it different for
men and women to be in politics.
Hopefully in the future, it will be easier for women to get into all levels
of government.

Japanese professor makes robot that looks just like him
Have you ever wished you had a robot that looked just like you that could
attend school for you, do your homework, and even answer questions from your
parents?
Duh!
Well, it may be less far off than you think. A professor of robotics
(機器人學) in Japan- Hiroshi Ishiguro- has made a robot that looks just
like him!
His latest project, Geminoid HI-6, copies Hiroshi's facial
expressions(表情), can have conversations (對話), and answer questions as
though it were Hiroshi himself!
He has previously made robots that look like humans, but his new project
looks just like him.
The professor says that the new robot knows ten books by Ishiguro and has a
Large Language Model (LLM)。 This means that the robot understands grammar
(文法)rules and has a big vocabulary- like a calculator for language!
So can you ask the robot about the content (內容)of Hiroshi's books?
Yep! It's read his books, so it can tell you what the books say.
Although the robot looks just like Ishiguro and can talk like him, it can't
walk.
The robot is 50 cm tall, with skin made of silicone (矽)。
Ishiguro started creating robots around 25 years ago- this is his sixth one!
Geminoid does not act autonomously- it is remote-controlled.
Ishiguro's work makes people think about the ethics (道德) of AI and
robotics.
Maybe in the future, robots could replace customer service (客服) workers
or could help us with chores.
It is difficult to imagine (想象)a world where robots look and talk like
humans.
But in Japan, there is a need for more robots. Japan is considered a
"super-aged" population (人口)- that means that more than 21% of the
population is over 65 years old. So, there's not a lot of young people there.
That means, there's not as many people to work. But we need people to be
servers in restaurants, or deliver mail.
In Japan, there's more robots doing these kinds of jobs- but usually not the
kind that Hiroshi makes.
Most robots being used in Japan today are used for manufacturing (製造業),
medicine, or hospitality (旅宿業)。
Hey, Taiwan is a super-aged society too- maybe we will have more robots soon!

Taiwanese-American Artist Turned Collections into Art
There are all kinds of art.
Some art is not always made by the artist.
In this kind of art, the idea is the important thing.
This kind of art is called conceptual (概念性的) art.
Rutherford Chang, a Taiwanese-American, was a conceptual artist.
When he liked something, he liked to get more than one... or two... or a
thousand!
He liked to collect things.
And he didn't throw anything away.
Some of his collections became his art.
When Rutherford was a teenager, he bought an album (專輯) by the Beatles
This famous album is often called "The White Album" because the album cover
is all white!
Later, he got another White Album.
And he noticed (注意到) that the covers of the two albums were a little
different (不同的).
They had started out the same.
The differences were very interesting to Rutherford.
So he got another White Album, and another, and...
People gave or sold him their White Albums.
Some people had drawn pictures on their albums.
Some had written on them.
Some had signed (簽名) them.
The cardboard (紙板) of the album covers had become old in different ways
with different owners (主人) in different places.
None of the 3,502 White Album covers in Rutherford's collection were the same
as another!
He saw that every album told a different story.
The records inside the albums were also a little different.
If a record was scratched (唱片有刮痕), for example, it made the music a
little different.
So he made recordings of one hundred of these records.
Then he made a record of the one hundred recordings playing at the same time.
He made an album cover that showed everything on the one hundred album covers.
He made 1,000 albums.
Then he traded (換) them for more White Albums!
To show the collection, he made a record store that didn't sell anything!
In his short life, Rutherford had interesting ideas that made him see art.

Latin American Celebration for Girls Opens to Boys
Customs (風俗) are traditional (傳統的) ways of doing things.
They can change over time.
For example, new foods or new songs may be added to a celebration
Customs can also change when people move to a different place.
For many Latin American (拉丁美洲) girls, turning 15 years old is a big deal
Some families have a big celebration.
It can be as big as a wedding (婚禮).
The girl wears a beautiful white dress.
She might wear a tiara (皇冠)!
This custom began in Latin America as a way to help the girl find someone to
marry.
In the U.S., where many Latin Americans live, this custom has been changing.
Celebrations have become bigger.
And girls can wear dresses in other colors.
The reason (原因) for the custom has changed there too.
It now is a way to show a girl is becoming an adult (成人).
Another change is happening to this custom in the U.S.
And it's great!
Boys are having celebrations!
Some boys ask for them.
They may have seen celebrations for their female (女性) family members or
female friends, and thought, "I want one too!"
Sometimes mothers want these parties.
Some don't have daughters.
Many want a celebration to show their sons are becoming adults.
Some families want more gender equality for this custom.
Others want to celebrate and respect (尊重) their child's gender identity
Some celebrations are simple.
But some families spend as much as $70,000 US dollars on them!
That's about $2.3 million NT!
How can they cost so much?
Well, there's the place where the party is held, the food, the boy's new suit
(西裝) or tuxedo (燕尾服), the band, a gift for the boy, and more!
Some boys try new things at these celebrations to show they are growing up.
One boy entered his party playing the tuba (大號).
Now he feels more confident (自信的).
Another boy had his long braids (辮) cut off during his party.
People who like traditions to stay the same don't like this change.
They say this party is just for girls.
But many other people are very happy.
And that's what a celebration is for - to make people happy!

Tasty Tidbit
Hmmmm. Which are there more of: stars in the Milky Way (銀河系) or trees on
Earth?
No one has counted them one by one, of course!
But using the data (數據) they have, scientists can estimate (估計) both.
So... have you made a guess yet?
I bet there are more stars.
Nope, there are more trees! There are way more trees.
You're kidding.
Well, we can't be 100% sure, but there are 100 billion to 400 billion stars
in the Milky Way.
Whoa. And what about trees?
Twenty years ago, scientists thought there were 400 billion trees.
That was close to the top number for stars! What happened?
Ten years ago, some scientists used a lot more data and math. Now they say
there are 3 trillion trees on Earth!
Well, 15 billion trees are cut down every year, so sadly, one day, my answer
will be right!

Tiny Toys, Big Questions: The AI Doll Trend
What would you look like as a toy?
Like, a real doll, in a little box, with fun clothes and cool stuff?
Many people are using AI to find out.
There's a trend on the internet.
People use computers to make doll versions (版本) of themselves.
Many people are calling it the AI doll trend
It's been everywhere on social media.
And it's not too hard.
You take a picture of yourself...
Send it to an AI program.
You tell the AI what kind of toy you want to be.
Do you want to be in a red box?
Do you want to wear blue shoes?
The AI takes what you want...
And ta-da!
It makes a picture of you as a doll!
Some people will add stuff.
They add toy sunglasses, toy headphones, or even toy pets.
Sounds like fun, right?
Many people are trying out this trend.
Even some big brands (大品牌) are joining in.
But before you turn yourself tiny...
There are some things to consider (考慮).
Making these pictures takes a lot of energy.
One expert says the computers used to power AI programs "burn through energy".
The expert says one famous AI program uses more electricity in one year than
117 countries!
So it's not exactly right to say these pictures are "free"...
At least not for the environment.
And maybe this energy could be used in a better way.
There are also worries about privacy.
Some people are worried that AI programs might use photos or ideas without
asking first.
So, overall, the AI doll trend is fun.
But it's also good to think about how we use technology and AI.

Meet a Dog-Sized Dino
Scientists have found a new kind of dinosaur, and it was about the size of a
dog!
This dinosaur lived around 150 million years ago (一億五千萬年前) in what is
now the United States.
It was named Enigmacursor mollyborthwickae.
Its name means "mysterious runner" (神秘的奔跑者), because it had long back
legs and could run fast to escape danger.
The dinosaur was about the size of a Labrador retriever, with a tail that
made up half its length.
It was lightly built (身體輕巧), weighed about the same as a collie
(體重大概和一隻牧羊犬差不多), and ate plants.
Scientists think it walked on two legs, making it quick and agile
The skeleton was discovered in Colorado (美國科羅拉多州) between 2021 and
2022.
What makes this discovery special is that the bones are almost complete.
Normally, only a few small pieces are found.
But this time, researchers could study many parts, including a unique thigh
bone (獨特的大腿骨) with special muscle attachments (特殊肌肉).
The skull was missing, so the one now on display in London's Natural History
Museum is a reconstruction.
The species name honors Molly Borthwick, the donor (捐助者) who helped bring
the skeleton to the museum.
This dinosaur is related to a species called Yandusaurus (鹽都龍) found in
China, which shows that these dinosaurs may have lived in many places.
Scientists say new dinosaurs are discovered almost every week.
But finding small dinosaurs like this is rare (很稀有), because their
skeletons are often broken apart or missed.
Imagine having this speedy little dinosaur as a pet.
It was about the size of a dog, could run fast, and only ate plants.
Maybe it would be fun to take it for a walk...if it didn't run away first!

A documentary, or 紀錄片, is a film or TV program that shows real people,
real places, or real events.
It's not made-up like a movie.
In our news story, we said that composer Wei-San Hsu wrote music for a
documentary called Invisible Nation.
Some documentaries show animals in the wild, or the history of a country, or
the life of a famous person.
It uses facts, interviews, and real video.
So when you hear "documentary," think of a movie that teaches you something
about the real world.
And now you know!
