Fans Say Farewell to Taiwan’s Classic Train
Fans are saying goodbye to an important part of Taiwan history.
A Fu-hsing train (復興號) took its last trip ever on March 29th.
The Fu-hsing trains were the first trains ever built in Taiwan.
They first entered service in 1981.
As you know, summers in Taiwan get very hot.
And the Fu-hsing trains were the first trains in Taiwan to have air
conditioning!
Now, after 41 years, they are being decommissioned (退役) from Taiwan’s
railroads.
Fans of the classic (經典) Taiwan train went to train stations in Hualien and
New Taipei City to see it.
They took photos and some people bought tickets to ride the train one last
time.
The train had special decorations on the outside for the event.
On March 29th, it left Hualien Station at 6:05am for its final trip to Shulin
Station.
The TRA sold 300 special tickets for this ride.
The tickets cost $150 NT each.
The TRA is trying to make its trains more modern(現代) so the Fu-Hsing trains
will be replaced by newer trains made in Japan and Korea.
Sadly, most of the Fu-Hsing trains will be scrapped (拆除).
But some cars will be used on different lines.

Cherry Blossoms Mark Start of Spring in Washington D.C.
Cherry blossom trees are blooming in many parts of the world!
Around this time of the year, these beautiful trees turn all white and pink
with flowers.
And Washington D.C. in the US hosts a Cherry Blossom Festival every year in
late March.
Every year more than 1.5 million people come from all over the world to see
the beautiful flowers.
When these flowers bloom, people know it's the start of spring in the US
capital.
March 21st was the peak (高峰) of cherry blossom season this year.
This was 10 days earlier than most years.
For the festival this year, there was a parade, live music, kite flying
(放風箏) and fireworks (煙火).
The cherry blossom trees were a gift from the mayor of Tokyo to the wife of
the US president in 1912.
That year 3,800 cherry blossom trees from Japan were planted (種) in the city.
Watching the cherry blossoms bloom is also popular in Japan, Taiwan, and many
other countries around the world.

Instant Noodle Store is Popular with Young Thais
Do you enjoy eating instant noodles?
If you do, then you might want to visit a new special store in Bangkok.
The name of the store is ‘Good Noodle’ and it opened last October.
And it sells more than 70 kinds of instant noodles.
The noodles come from countries across Asia including Indonesia, South Korea,
China, Hong Kong and even Taiwan.
Shoppers can cook and eat the noodles in the shop.
The shop is very popular (受歡迎) with young Thai people.
There are so many choices in the shop, and it's not too expensive.
But health experts warn that people shouldn’t eat instant noodles too often.
They say instant noodles do not have nutrients that your body needs.

Pingtung Sends Pineapples to Singapore
Did you know that there are more than 90 different kinds of pineapple in
Taiwan?
To most people, they may look almost identical.
Pineapples first came to Taiwan from China, during the Qing Dynasty (清朝).
And different kinds of pineapple from Hawaii and Southeast Asia were also
introduced, during the Japanese colonial period
During that time, Taiwan became the third biggest exporter of pineapples in
the world.
Now, most of Taiwan's pineapples are grown in Pingtung, Kaohsiung, and Tainan.
But Pingtung's farmers like to say that the country's most famous pineapple
is the "golden diamond", also called the "Tainung 17", which can be canned
(裝成罐頭) or eaten fresh (新鮮地吃).
Pingtung farmers may be a little bit biased
But they say their golden diamond pineapples are the best in the country,
because they are sweet, not too sour, and they have a thin rind (果皮), which
makes them easy to peel (剝開).
The Pingtung County government says the region harvests (收穫) more than 120
thousand tons of pineapples every year.
Most of the pineapples are harvested between February and June, and they are
sent to mainland China, and Japan.
In fact, nearly all of the pineapples harvested in Pingtung at the beginning
of this year went to Japan.
But farmers are now hoping that they'll find new fans outside of North Asia,
and they've sent their first pineapple shipment to Singapore.
And Pingtung pineapples will now be sold at one of Singapore's largest
supermarket chains (連鎖超市).
If the Singapore market picks up, Taiwan may have a new regular customer
(新的固定買家) for its golden fruit.

Robots Learn to Peel Bananas in Japan
Robots can do plenty of things.
They can clean floors... and they can deliver food.
And during the last Olympics in Beijing, robots were even used to cook meals,
which looked impressive (令人印象深刻), even though we're not sure what robot
cooking tastes like.
Now, Japanese scientists say they have trained a robot to do something a bit
more challenging (更有挑戰性的).
They've taught a robot to peel bananas.
It doesn't take much for people like you and me to peel bananas.
But this action is much more difficult for a robot, since they need to peel
the delicate fruits without squashing them.
Pictures from the University of Tokyo, where the banana-peeling robot can be
found, showed mechanical (機械性的) hands reaching for a banana and then
peeling it.
Researchers who are training the robot to peel the banana say they had to
demonstrate (展現) the action hundreds of times, before they had enough data
(數據) to teach the robot how to do the simple action.
In the end, it took the robot more than 13 hours of training (訓練) before it
could peel a banana.
And even then, the robot was only successful 57 percent of the time.
But researchers say they still hope to train robots to do other easy human
tasks.
And that the robots can help alleviate (減輕) Japan's ongoing labor shortage,
so they can do things like make lunch boxes or work with food processing
Let's hope it takes researchers less time to teach their robots new actions...
Or it could take the robots a long time, to do things that humans can do in a
few seconds!

Dogs Get Six-Star Service in South Africa
Dog owners who live in the South African city of Cape Town
have a new way to make their pets comfortable.
That's because the "Superwoof Dog Hotel and Daycare" promises to give dogs
six-star service (六星級的服務).
That's even more luxurious (豪華的) than many of the five-star hotels for
people!
Dogs who stay at Superwoof can take long walks in the countryside.
They can also spend time at an outdoor deck (甲板) with a swimming pool.
Superwoof even has its own champagne (香檳) for dogs, called "cham-paws",
which is water with herbs, in a champagne bottle.
But the owners of the special doggie hotel aren't just interested in giving
other people's pets six-star service...
Their website says Superwoof also helps homeless dogs find loving homes!

Tainan's "Pink Pond"
Picture a beautiful pond (池塘) in your head.
What color is the water?
Is it blue or green?
How about the color pink?
There is a pond in Tainan that is becoming famous... because it is pink!
The pond is in Tainan's Qigu District (七股).
It is actually a fish pond (魚塭).
And the water in the pond is pink, because of the photosynthetic bacteria
Many fish farmers grow this bacteria in their ponds.
The bacteria helps keep fish, shrimp, and other animals in the pond healthy.
And this bacteria is pink.
So a little photosynthetic bacteria makes the water light pink.
And a lot of the bacteria makes the water a bright pink.
The pond in Tainan has a lot of the special bacteria.
So it is a bright pink color.
Some people have said the pond looks like a strawberry milkshake
But if you want to go take pictures, you have to ask the owner of the fish
pond first.
There are other "pink ponds" in Taiwan.
Fish ponds near Kinmen County's Ci Lake (金門慈湖) are also pink.
And Lake Hillier, in Australia, is one of the most famous pink lakes in the
world.
Lake Hillier is bright pink.
It is surrounded by green plants.
And it is right next to the ocean.
So many people enjoy the colors of the bright pink lake, bright green plants,
and bright blue ocean, all together.

Japanese Chopsticks Make Food Taste More Salty
Sometimes, a salty snack just tastes so good.
Our bodies need a little salt (鹽份) to stay healthy.
But lots of foods we eat now have too much salt.
And too much salt can be bad for you.
You might feel very thirsty, or weak (虛弱).
And too much salt can lead to high blood pressure (高血壓), and even heart
Now scientists in Japan may have a way for us to enjoy salty foods without
hurting our bodies.
It's a pair of chopsticks (筷子).
But they aren't just normal chopsticks.
These chopsticks can make food taste 1.5 times more salty.
With these chopsticks, people can use less salt, and still enjoy the taste of
their food.
How do they do this?
The chopsticks come with a mini-computer.
The eater wears the mini-computer on their wrist.
And a tiny bit of electricity goes through the chopsticks.
The electricity does not hurt the person at all.
Together, the mini-computer and electricity make the person taste saltiness
in their mouth.
So there might be only a little salt in the dish.
But the eater will taste a lot of saltiness.
Scientists say the chopsticks may go on sale next year.

Glove puppetry made from sand
What do Taiwanese glove puppetry and sand have in common?
They will both be features (特點) in the 2022 Fulong International Sand
Sculpture Arts Festival in New Taipei City!
The feature for the event will be sculptures made out of sand.
A total of 36 sand sculptures (沙雕) will be displayed on weekends from May
26th to October 10th.
They are made by mixing water and sand, then piled into wooden forms to make
the shape.
Then, it is pressed together to make the base so that the artist can continue
making their sculpture.
The main highlight (主要亮點) will be an eight-meter-tall sand statue of Su
Huan-jen, the main character of Pili.
Pili is one of Taiwan's best known glove puppetry shows (布袋戲)。
The TV series debuted in 1984, and it still continues today.
It is one of the most popular TV shows in Taiwan.
Unlike traditional puppet shows, Pili uses computers to make the action
There will also be sculptures of Su in different disguises (裝扮), and many
other Pili characters, too.
During the event, visitors will also have a chance to meet with the actors
behind these fictional characters (虛構人物) and take part in other
activities.
Visitors can enjoy concerts (演唱會),
eat food and buy souvenirs (伴手禮) at a market,
and experience workshops (工作坊) to try their hand at making sand sculptures.

The sun disrupts our radio signals.
A sunspot (太陽黑子) threw off a double solar flare on April 25th, causing
some radios to stop working in Asia and Australia.
Sunspots are areas that appear dark on the surface of the Sun.
They appear dark because they are cooler than other parts of the Sun's
surface.
Solar flares are a sudden explosion of energy caused by magnetic field lines
near sunspots.
Scientists called the Sunspot AR2993.
The sunspot AR2993 erupted (爆發) with two flares very quickly.
And the magnetic wave (磁波) was strong enough to stop radios on Earth.
They say it's "medium-sized", but it is actually hundreds of millions of
kilometers big.
Earth would sit in the active region as comfortably as an egg in a nest.
Solar flares not only cause disruption (中斷) on our radio signals,
But they also light up the night sky in the North and South Pole, making
beautiful auroras (極光) that we can see.

Eating meat grown in a lab is good for the planet - and your health!
Eating meat grown in labs or ground up insects (磨碎的昆蟲) could help the
environment, reduce carbon emissions, and use less water.
Researchers say these kinds of foods could cut pollution (污染) on the planet
by 80%.
But it's not clear if people want to eat bugs or meat grown in labs.
Scientists are trying to figure out another way to grow food so that it has
more protein (蛋白質) while using less land and water.
The researchers looked at the nutrition of some of those products and three
types of environmental pressure: water use, land use, and carbon emissions
Alternative foods can reduce these impacts by 80-percent while providing more
nutrients (營養素) than a vegan or a vegetarian diet.
New foods include ground up flies and crickets, eggs made in the lab from
chicken cells(細胞), and seaweed and mushrooms.
A professor from Cambridge thinks it may be better, but changing people's
diets will be hard.
Many studies have shown that eating a plant-based diet (植物性飲食) is good
for you and the environment.
So make sure to eat more vegetables every day!

Big Bag of Money Gets Thrown Away
What should you do if you accidentally throw a large amount of money into the
trash?
Imagine this… you have over 80,000 NT in cash (現金), and you want to
deposit it in the bank (存進銀行) in the morning.
You can't find anywhere to keep the money safe, so you put it in a paper bag
But when the garbage truck (垃圾車) drives by your house, your family throws
the paper bag away!
This might seem like a scene from a movie (電影片段), but it's actually what
happened to a family in Hsinchu last month.
The Hsinchu Bureau of Environmental Protection (新竹環保局) received a phone
call one day, saying that an elderly member of the family
accidentally threw away a paper bag with 80,000 NT inside.
They quickly called the garbage truck workers, who then told the family to go
to the landfill (掩埋場) as soon as possible.
Luckily, after one hour of searching (尋找), the family found their paper bag
with the money.
The garbage truck crew later explained (解釋) that if someone accidentally
throws away something important, they can most likely still recover it (尋獲)
in the first hour.
But after one hour has passed, the garbage truck may have already arrived at
the incinerator (焚化爐).
So remember, always keep your valuables in a safe place…
And if they ever get thrown away, you'd better hurry up!

U.K. Man Makes Money Being Barefoot
Would you ever leave your house and go out into the public without any shoes
on?
Nowadays, shoes are not just a necessity (必需品).
Some people mix and match shoes with different outfits (服裝), and some
people even wear shoes to show off their wealth.
So can you imagine living without shoes for a month?
Well, believe it or not, this is exactly what one man in the U.K. did.
George, a 20-year-old man from Cambridge, England, got rid of his shoes in
October of 2021.
He was originally a "religious shoe-wearer" (鞋子狂熱分子), wearing shoes
both indoors and outdoors.
One day, he suddenly started to question why he needed shoes, and searched
online (網路上尋找) for an answer.
But instead, he found the many benefits (好處) of NOT wearing shoes.
And from that moment on, he decided he was never going to wear shoes again.
After that, many people on the streets looked at him with disdain
(厭惡的表情), and store workers wouldn't let him inside.
But George said he felt happier than he had ever been before, and shared his
experiences on social media.
Since then, millions of people have seen his videos, and his fans (粉絲) have
even sent him money to support his barefoot lifestyle.
Now, George is optimistic (樂觀) about the future, saying that it's only a
matter of time before he makes more money.
But if you're going to go somewhere without shoes, just remember to watch
where you walk!

What Makes People Happy in Different Countries?
There's no doubt that this summer has been one of the hottest in history.
There has been lots of research that strongly suggests the weather affects
our moods and emotions.
A lot of people think that hot and humid weather makes a person cranky
(暴躁易怒), and that cold, dark winters can easily make a person depressed
And results from one study show that people who live in places where the
average monthly temperature is around 18 degrees Celsius are usually the
happiest.
But does this mean people who live in countries near the equator (赤道), or
in very cold countries, are never happy?
Of course not!
So what makes people happy to live in a country?
According to research by the World Values Survey (世界價值觀調查), the level
of people's happiness in a country comes mainly from three things.
Those three things are strong economic development (蓬勃的經濟), democracy
(民主化), and inclusiveness (包容度).
Researchers say that together, these three things help people to feel "free".
So, the next time you are feeling moody or cranky about the weather, think
about these things, before you wish you lived in a different country!
