It's me, Trevor Tortomasi...
And me, Nancy Sun.
Alright, today's topics:
Is Taiwan too convenient?
Toys rain down on a football match...
And a little doggie goes on a big trip.
More on that, coming up in just a sec(ond)!

Taiwan's Last Township Without a Convenience Store
It's there when you're hungry...
And it's there when you need to mail a letter (寄信), or pay your bills
(付帳單), or buy toilet paper (買衛生紙).
What is it?
It's a convenience store
And in Taiwan, convenience stores are all over the place
Well, except for one...
Taitung's Jinfeng Township is now the last township in Taiwan without a
convenience store.
So, does that mean it's inconvenient (不方便)?
Of course not!
Some people in Jinfeng say it would be nice to have a 7-11, or a FamilyMart,
or an OK Mart, or a Hi-Life, or a Simple Mart, or a...
But other people say it would be bad for local businesses.
They say if you can buy everything at a convenience store, then you might not
walk down the street to a fruit shop, or a restaurant, or a post office, or a

And other other people believe the convenience stores and local stores could
find a way to work together.
Either way...
How convenient... is too convenient?

People Throw Toys at a Football Match
In Turkey, a recent football game was paused after 4 minutes and 17 seconds.
That's because Turkey and Syria (敘利亞) recently had a giant earthquake
(強烈地震) on February 6th, at 4:17 AM.
In the earthquake, many people lost their homes, or their lives.
And because life is so difficult for the survivors (倖存者), many people want
to help.
Some are donating money (捐錢), and others are donating food (捐贈食物).
So, why did Turkey pause that football game?
They paused it to let people throw toys onto the field!
All of these people were donating toys (捐贈玩具) to help the children who
survived the earthquake.
Of course, they were all soft toys, like stuffed animals (填充玩具), dolls
(娃娃), and colorful pillows (各種顏色的枕頭).
The crowd cheered (歡呼), and thanked everyone who had worked hard to help
others.
So, think about all of the nice things you have...
What would you give to someone else?

Dog Accidentally Goes Traveling
Maybe you enjoy going on road trips
But if you're going on a long trip in a car, you probably want to plan it
Not this dog, though!
This dog, named Ralph, was walking with his owner (主人) down the street.
And while his owner paused to talk with a friend, Ralph saw an open door, and
jumped inside.
Ralph
But it was the door of a taxi (計程車)...
And suddenly (突然), they were driving!
Ralph had no collar, so the driver could not call his owner.
And the driver still had to do his job... so he drove!
Ralph was in the car for 160 kilometers (一百六十公里) before the driver
finally had time to drive him home.
Ralph was happy to see his owner again... but maybe he's still thinking about
his next road trip!

I'm Trevor Tortomasi...
And I'm Brody Halverson.
Today's stories...
Taiwanese technicians learn how to take care of wind farms, one boy orders
too much food, and why we feel more tired in the winter.
Let's talk about it right now!
________________________________
Technicians Train to Keep Taiwan's Wind Farms Running
Taiwan's wind farms make a lot of power.
They use wind turbines (風力發電機) to make clean, renewable energy
Every year, more wind farms are being built in Taiwan.
Many of them are offshore (離岸), so they can get strong winds on the ocean.
In addition, lots of these wind farms are built by foreign companies.
These companies are investing in Taiwan, to help the country's green energy
Now, local technicians (技師) must learn how to take care of the wind farms.
That's why many Taiwanese technicians are going to train in Europe.
These apprentices (徒弟) travel to England (英國), Denmark (丹麥), and
Belgium (比利時) to learn how to take care of a wind turbine.
What's more, the work is not simple.
The apprentices must learn from master technicians, because these machines
can be very complicated (複雜).
They must work with electricity.
And much of their work is high in the air, above the open ocean.
There are many risks (風險), so they must be careful.
The apprentices also need English skills, to train in Europe and communicate
with co-workers (同事) from other countries.
Because of the challenges in this work, there are not enough technicians
(技術人員不夠) in Taiwan.
So after they finish their apprenticeship (學徒制), they will come back to
Taiwan to work.
According to one estimate, there will soon be more than 20,000 new jobs on
wind farms in Taiwan.
There are big opportunities for local technicians who are smart, skilled, and

Young Son Uses Dad's Phone to Order a Feast
Do you like to order food online?
You can use an app to get delicious food delivered to your house.
And there are so many choices!
But you need to be careful, or you might order too much food.
That's what happened to a family in Michigan
One evening, a dad let his six-year-old son play with his phone.
Soon, lots of food started to show up (出現) at his door.
There were pizzas and chili cheese fries
And delivery drivers (外送員) just kept coming.
They got salads, sandwiches, shrimp, and shawarma (沙威瑪).
That's when the dad realized (了解到) his son had ordered all this food on an
app!
In the end, it cost the family more than a thousand dollars
They had a talk with their son, changed the phone password, and shared the
food with their neighbors.

People May Need More Sleep in Winter
Winter is so cold!
It's hard to get out of bed in the morning.
Do you think so too?
Well, it's not because you're lazy (懶惰).
According to new research (根據最新研究), people may just need more sleep in
winter!
Researchers (研究人員) in Germany found that in the winter, people need to
sleep for about an hour longer each day.
What does this mean? The researchers say that we may need to adjust our sleep
patterns.
In other words, we might need to go to sleep earlier in the cold, dark winter
months.
We might even need to change work and school schedules (時間表) during the
winter.

A School with Eggs Everywhere
Many schools keep pets.
Some have dogs.
Some have fish.
But how about "school chickens" (校雞)?
Ming-qing Elementary School in Changhua County keeps chickens.
The school says 7 chickens live there.
They sleep in the trees at night.
And during the day, they will walk around the schoolyard.
The hens (母雞) lay many eggs.
In fact, they lay around five to six eggs every week.
You might have heard news stories about an "egg shortage" (缺蛋).
But this school has eggs all over the place!
The hens lay eggs in the grass, in the school garden, and sometimes in boxes
and on papers.
This means that students may find a "surprise" when they are at school.
The school principal says students will tell him about finding eggs at school
almost every day.
But the principal says not many eggs hatch (孵化).
The school now has a special machine to keep the eggs warm and help them
hatch.
So students there often see hens taking care of chicks.
And they are learning a lot about eggs, chickens, and the wonder of living
things.

Japan Finds 7,000 New Islands
Japan is a country made up of islands.
It has four big islands.
They are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku.
And there are also many more small islands.
But Japan recently got a big surprise.
It found more islands.
In fact, it found 7,000 more islands!
35 years ago, Japan counted its islands.
At that time, scientists had found 6,852.
But now, scientists used new mapping technology.
And they found 7,000 more islands.
Some of those new islands also come from volcano eruptions.
Lava from the volcano flows into the ocean.
And it cools and hardens, becoming a new island.
So now there are 14,125 islands in Japan.
All these islands are natural, not made by people.
And they all have a circumference of at least 100 meters.
It seems science just never stops surprising us!

The blue pill lets him forget, and go back to the fake world.
And the red pill lets him see the real world.
Well, it turns out, Keanu took the red pill.
As in, he really took it.
The actor says in an interview, that he took the red pill prop (道具) home

Well, there are 192 people who aren't scared!
These 192 people are in a bike race (自由車賽) from Taipei to Kaohsiung.

It's called the "Tour de Taiwan" (環台賽)!
The racers (參賽者) are divided into 23 teams (分成二十三個隊), from 31
For the first part of the race (比賽的第一部分), they rode around Taipei for
more than 80 kilometers (騎了八十多公里).
Every day after that, they rode around 100 more kilometers...
And the road was super steep
And on the last day, they finished at the Kaohsiung National Stadium
Of course, they were riding REALLY fast, and they needed to be very careful
So they had cars driving in front and in back, to give them space to ride
safely.

It's called the "Academy Awards", and the award is a little golden statue

The Indian action movie (印度動作片) named "RRR" got "Best Original Song"
(最佳原創歌曲), for its song "Naatu Naatu"...
And "Best Documentary" went to a movie about Alexei Navalny, a man fighting
for change in Russia
Many people say this year's Academy Awards felt very different than before,
and many people are happy about the change.
But one nice thing stayed the same...

Chicken Poo Power
Okay, our last story is pretty silly...
But it's really good news!
One man in Kenya (肯亞) has found a new way to get power (供應能源) for his
farm.
He uses chicken poop
Every morning, he collects the poopoo and puts it into a special machine
This makes something called biogas (沼氣).
Of course, the biogas has to go through a filter, to remove all the bad stuff
and bad smells.
But after that, it can be used for power
He uses it for hot water, for cooking, and even to charge his electric car
He says it helps him to save money (省錢), and it doesn't hurt the
So, this poopoo is pretty useful (滿好用)!
Are you brave enough to use it?

Taipei Zoo's Happy Chicken Village
The Taipei Zoo has created a special place called the "Happy Chicken Village"
(快樂雞莊) to show people how to take care of chickens in a sustainable way
The village is designed (設計) to make the chickens happy and comfortable
The Taipei Zoo says that taking care of animals is important, and they want
to show people how to do it right.
The enclosure (場所) is a special place where chickens can run around and
play.
And they have a cozy (舒服的) place to lay their eggs.
The zoo says they will have 80 chickens living in the village, and they will
start laying eggs (下蛋) in about two months.
They think they will get around 60 eggs each day!
The eggs will be collected (收集) and cooked for the other animals at the zoo
to eat (煮給動物園的其他動物享用).
The zoo hopes that people will see how happy the chickens are and will want
to buy eggs that are made from happy chickens, so that farmers will start
taking care of their animals in a friendly way too.
Chickens are important animals, and their eggs are a healthy source of

The "Happy Chicken Village" is a great example (範例) of how to take care of
chickens in a sustainable way.
We hope that more people will learn from the zoo and take care of their

Spanish Church Emerges from Drought
There is a very old church in Catalonia, Spain
It's called the Church of Sant Roma (聖羅馬教堂), and it has just re-emerged
from a reservoir after a drought that has lasted for months.
Spain has not had enough rain over the last three years, and it has caused a
long-term drought (長期乾旱).
Because of this, some old structures (古老建築物) like the Church of Sant
Roma have been re-appearing from reservoirs (水庫).
The ancient church was flooded in the 1960s when a dam was built nearby to
supply water.
Now, water levels (水位) in Catalonia are so low that the Sau Reservoir is
only ten per cent full at the moment (Sau水庫目前只有容量的十分之一).
So, the church has re-appeared!
Lots of people are visiting the Sau Reservoir to see the church, but it's
causing some problems for the fish and wildlife (野生動物) in the area.
Fishermen and wildlife workers are having to remove fish from the lake to
save them and keep the reservoir clean because there is not enough water.
The dry weather in Spain is also increasing the risk of wildfires
(也增加了野火的風險), so officials in Catalonia are asking people to cut down
(減少) on their water use.

Dinosaur with World's Longest Neck
And now for some exciting news from the world of dinosaurs!
Scientists have discovered something new about a dinosaur called
Mamenchisaurus sinocanadorum (馬門溪龍).
It lived more than 160 million years ago
This dinosaur has the longest neck (脖子) of any animal that has ever lived!
The neck of the Mamenchisaurus sinocanadorum is around 15 meters long
The Mamenchisaurus sinocanadorum was discovered in northwest China in 1987,
and it's part of a group of dinosaurs called sauropods
Sauropods are known for having long necks.
Scientists looked at the bones and fossils (化石) of the Mamenchisaurus
sinocanadorum to figure out how long its neck was.
They compared the fossils to the skeletons (骨架) of its closest relatives
and concluded (得出結論) that the dinosaur had a 15-meter-long neck!
Sauropods had such long necks because they used them to get food.
Having a long neck also increases the body's surface area, allowing sauropods
to get rid of extra body heat.
The new findings (新發現) about Mamenchisaurus sinocanadorum show how much
scientists can discover about dinosaurs from incomplete fossils
