Mosquitoes Found in Iceland

Narrator: Mosquitoes like to live in warm and wet places. But most places in
the world have mosquitoes. Some kinds of mosquitoes can live in cold places.
蚊子喜歡住在溫暖潮濕的地方，但全球大部分的地區都有蚊子，有些種類的蚊子甚至可以住在寒帶地區！

Only two places in the world had no mosquitoes. One is Antarctica. It is very
cold there. The other was Iceland. It is very cold too. But someone found
mosquitoes there!
以前，世界上只有南極和冰島沒有蚊子。那兩個地方非常寒冷，蚊子無法存活。但現在，冰島出現了蚊子。

A man in Iceland was in his garden. He likes bugs to come to his garden. He
saw a fly. It was the first time he saw this kind of fly. He caught it. Then
he found two more! Hmmmmm … Were they mosquitoes?!
有一名冰島男子喜歡看到昆蟲飛到他的院子。有一天，他以為看到蒼蠅，這是第一次看到這種蒼蠅；他把牠抓住。接著他又看到兩隻!
他懷疑是蚊子嗎！?

A bug expert looked at the three bugs. The expert said …
Bug expert: Yes, these are mosquitoes.
Narrator: 後來，一位昆蟲專家檢查了這三隻昆蟲，並確認牠們真的是蚊子。

These mosquitoes can live in cold places. The man thinks they came on a boat.
這個種類的蚊子可以生活在寒帶。男子推測蚊子是搭船來到冰島。

But Iceland is getting warmer quickly. It was very warm last year. The warmer
weather may help mosquitoes live there. Before, Iceland had no mosquitoes.
Now only Antarctica has no mosquitoes.
冰島的氣候正在快速變暖。去年冰島的溫度特別高，讓蚊子可以生存。這個曾經看不到蚊子的地方，也已經淪陷，現在只剩下南極沒有蚊子了。

Scientists are watching. Will there be mosquitoes in Iceland from now on?

Kigali Is Bringing Back Its Wetlands

Wetlands are land covered in water. Taiwan has many wetlands. Go for a walk
in one. You will lose your boots in the mud!

Wetlands are full of life! Many animals and plants live there.
濕地是被水覆蓋的土地，有很多動物跟植物住在那裡！走在濕地上，只要一不小心鞋子就可能會陷在泥巴裡！

Wetlands keep us safe. When it rains, wetlands take in water. This helps stop
floods.

But climate change is hurting wetlands. It is changing when rain comes and
how much rain falls.

It is bringing warmer weather. About one-fourth of the world's wetlands are
gone. Another one-fourth are very sick.
濕地能夠保護我們。下雨的時候雨水會被濕地吸收！但是，氣候變遷正在傷害濕地，降雨的時間跟雨量也都在改變。現在全世界大約四分之一的濕地已經消失，另外四分之一狀況不佳。

Kigali is a city in Rwanda. It has heavy rain and lots of floods. Floods
destroy homes and businesses. They hurt people.
非洲國家盧安達的基加利市常常下大雨，也很容易發生洪水。洪水破壞房屋跟商店，也會傷害居民。

Kigali had many wetlands. But they were used for fishing and farming.

Now, people there want to bring the wetlands back! They are building islands,
lakes, and ponds. They are planting plants. They are making rivers!
以前基加利有很多濕地，但都變成漁業跟農業用地。現在當地人想要濕地回來。他們建造小島、挖掘湖泊跟池塘，並且栽種植物，讓河流重新出現！

One of Kigali's wetlands has been saved! It has water, life, and a forest! It
helps a lot with floods. Five more wetlands will be saved this year!
其中一個濕地已經被救回來了！那裡有水、有生命、有森林，能有效減少洪水的發生。基加利預計今年還會再恢復五個濕地！

Wetlands save lives. Let's all keep our wetlands safe!

Today, it's all about the environment!

We hear from people trying to save animals in Taiwan, then learn about the
death of a glacier in Iceland, before we hear a little kpop music!

Animal Rights Groups Want Government Protection for Wildlife
動保聯盟呼籲政府保護瀕危物種

Taiwan is filled with animals not found anywhere else in the world

But a group of people say the government is not doing enough to protect them.

The Taiwan Animal Protection Monitor Network says it has been 30 years, since
the government passed laws to protect wildlife (野生動物).

Wildlife is actually two words put together: wild, like things that live out
in nature, without any help or control from people, and life, like living
things.

But the animal rights group says there is still a major problem of endangered
animals close to disappearing.

The group says there are only around 500 leopard cats, 200 to 600 Asian black
bears, and 50 Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins left in Taiwan.

And government data also show that Taiwan has six bird species that are
critically endangered (極度瀕危), meaning they are very very close to
becoming extinct, almost completely gone, close to being all dead.

The group wants the government to put more money towards saving such animals.

Iceland Holds Farewell Ceremony for Glacier
冰島為冰河辦告別式


People in Iceland have said goodbye to a glacier (冰河). A river of ice,
found in coldest places on earth.

Okjokull was about 700 years old, and was the smallest glacier in Iceland.

It was also the first glacier to be officially declared dead by scientists,
because it was not thick enough to move anymore.

In live glaciers, the ice is heavy enough to move and change shape because of
the pull of gravity.

But the snow and ice in Okjokull melted so much that it is too small and has
stopped moving.

Scientists say the glacier died because of climate change.

Iceland's Prime Minister held a ceremony to say goodbye to the glacier, and
put down a sign to show where it had been.

A Member of BTS Has Released an English Song
BTS的 團員出了英文歌

Are you fans of K-pop? 韓國流行音樂? The K in K-pop is short for Korean,
while the 'pop' is short for popular music.

One of the members of the K-pop supergroup BTS has released a solo song.
Not only that, the track, by member V, is entirely in English.

Called Winter Bear, the song has been released with a full music video as
well.

In the music video, V is seen wandering through cities around the world, such
as Paris, London, Los Angeles, and New York.

It shows him taking photos of local sights, or just hanging out in the
various different cities.

This makes people think that the music video was shot while BTS was on their
world tour, called Love Yourself: Speak Yourself.

Fans obviously in love with this new song, and the music video is one of the
top trending videos on social media platforms.

Scientists say the glacier died because of climate change.

V is a k-pop singer 韓國流行音樂. K for Korean, while the 'pop' is short for
popular music.

V's new song is called "Winter Bear". He has also released a full music video
for the song.

New Taipei Testing Driverless E-buses

Driverless electric buses will soon be running on the streets of New Taipei.

City officials say the driverless e-buses (無人駕駛電動公車) will start
service later this year.

Electric (電動) cars, buses, and scooters, are more and more common around
the world.

They are better for the environment because electric vehicles do not make air
pollution.

And the e-buses being tested in Danhai New Town will also be driverless,
meaning the buses will drive themselves.

The buses will help people get to the Danhai lightrail system.


Teenage Environmental Activist Crosses the Atlantic
瑞典少女抗暖化乘帆船橫渡大西洋


A 16 year old girl sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to fight global warming.

Global warming (地球暖化) is the earth getting hotter and hotter.

Scientists say our planet is warming up faster than it ever has before.

If the earth warms up too much or too quickly, life could become very
difficult for all living things. Some scientists say 30-40-percent of the
world's animals could die out.

Some people also call what's happening on earth climate change (氣候變化)

And 16-year-old Greta Thunberg from Sweden wants to stop it.

She left the United Kingdom (英國) on a boat, and sailed for 15 days.

There were three adults on the boat with Greta, including her father.

Her boat is 18-meters long, and it does not put out any air pollution.

The boat has no shower or toilet, and they ate freeze-dried (冷凍乾燥) food.

After sailing 4-thousand-800-km, she arrived in New York City.

Greta says she did this to tell people that "our war on nature must end".

She was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize (諾貝爾和平獎) earlier this year.


Taipei Amusement Park Sees 10 Mil. Visitor
兒童新樂園破千萬旅客

The Taipei Children's Amusement Park has broken the 10 million visitor mark.

Visitor, 旅客, is someone who travels to another location, or who is a guest
in a place that is not their home.

The lucky 10 millionth visitor was presented with an unlimited pass to the
park and its attractions for a full year.

Unlimited, 無限, means without any maximum or restrictions.

The five visitors before and after the 10 millionth each got a season pass.

Four of the winners were first-time visitors to the park, including a mother
and son who had traveled all the way from Changhua to Taipei just to come to
the park.

Many of the winners were not children or parents but rather young couples,
which operators say shows the park is a popular spot for dates.
