Salvador Dali Comes to Taipei
Have you heard of Salvador Dali?
Salvador Dali is thought to be one of the masters (師傅) of surrealism.
You might know some of his paintings… like the one with melting clocks
Do you know what surrealism is?
No problem. It's a kind of art.
It's a kind of art that emphasizes (強調) thoughts we might have in our
heads, or dreams.
It can be strange, spooky (恐怖), or surprising.
Surrealist art doesn't look real… because that's the point… it's surreal!
Salvador Dali has come to Taiwan.
Not the artist, he died in the 80s, but his art!
Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall (中正紀念堂) in Taipei is hosting an exhibition
(展覽) featuring over 100 of Dali's works of art.
Most of them are watercolor paintings that he created between 1959 and 1963.
They were inspired by an Italian poem.
But there are some oil paintings (油畫), too.
In fact the painting with the melting clocks, "In Search of the Fourth
Dimension", will be there, too!
And an animated film (動畫) Dali made with Disney will be shown there.
That's right, Dali made a film with Disney!
The exhibition will run until April 13, so you have plenty of time to go and
check it out yourself!

US Hit by Severe Snowstorms
Brrrrrr… close the window, it's cold!
It can feel very cold in Taiwan in the winter.
But not as cold as a lot of countries… including the US.
In fact, it was so cold on the west coast (西岸) of the US recently that
several states were hit by severe snowstorms (暴風雪).
By December 28, Almost 76 centimeters of snow had fallen in California (加州).
For some of you… that would mean snow up to your waist!
There were power cuts (停電) in the states of Oregon and Washington… so
people had no electricity for a while.
And in the states of Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Colorado and California
there were warnings (警報) there could be avalanches.
Avalanches (雪崩) are when snow falls down a mountain in a big wave.
They can be very dangerous. They can bury trees, houses and buildings under
deep snow.
But avalanches weren't the only danger Americans faced.
The country's National Weather Service, or NWS, warned that extremely low
temperatures could cause severe wind chills
"Wind chill" happens when wind blows away the warmer layer (層) of air we
usually have above our skin. It makes the air feel much colder.
The NWS said this could make it feel like minus 48 degrees.
And this could cause frostbite!
Wind
chill。
I don't want my fingers to fall off… I'm glad I live in Taiwan!

Basketball Fan Sinks Shot and Wins 600 Thousand NT
He shoots…
He scores!
And he wins 600,000 NT?
Are you a big basketball fan (粉絲)?
A man in Kaohsiung who goes by the name Hung is, and he recently got his
chance to show off his skills (展現技能) and win a huge prize.
On Sunday December 26, the Kaohsiung Steelers basketball team played the
Taoyuan Pilots at the Kaohsiung Fengshan Stadium
The Steelers lost 70 to 88 to the Pilots. But there was still a victory
(勝利) for Kaohsiung that day.
At half time - that's when half the game is over and the teams take a break -
the Steelers held a competition.
They invited three members of the audience to the court.
They called out three ticket numbers, and the people holding those tickets
made their way to the court.
Hung was one of those people.
The contestants had to throw the basketball into the net (網) from the
half-way line.
Hung bounced the ball (運球) a few times… he ran up to the half-way line…
and took his shot…
And the ball went into the net!
Hung jumped for joy and the crowd cheered!
It was an impressive shot.
But what's more, Hung won 600,000 NT!
He said he would use the money to take his family and girlfriend out for a
nice meal and then save the rest of it (把剩下的存起來).
Do you think you could make the shot?

Kids in Portugal Take Legal Action to Prevent Climate Change
We should all take action to prevent (防治) climate change.
But some kids in Europe are taking legal action.
They're getting lawyers involved (請了律師) and going to the European Court
of Human Rights (歐洲人權法院).
They think a clean and safe environment should be a human right (人權) - that
means no one should be able to take it away.
It's the first time an environment-related case (案子) has been filed at the
European Court of Human Rights.
And the case argues that the governments in 33 European countries have not
done enough to prevent climate change.
It was started by two siblings from Portugal called Andre and Sofia.
Portugal has seen many wildfires (野火) over the past few years.
Wildfires have always happened there, but in recent years they have become
bigger and caused more damage than before.
And experts think it is due to climate change.
This inspired (激發) Andre and Sofia to do something.
They want to make sure that the leaders of European governments who have
pledged, or agreed, to reduce emissions, actually keep their promises.
They want to use the law to force them to take more action.
Andre and Sofia are not sure their case will win, but they hope it can at
least set an example (樹立榜樣) for other young people in the future.

Amber Heard Names New Dog Barnaby Joyce
Actress Amber Heard has named her dog after the Australian minister Barnaby
Joyce.
Joyce is actually the deputy prime minister of Australia.
Barnaby Joyce
But why did Heard, who is the star of Aquaman and Drive Angry, do this?
She had an argument with the minister in 2015.
At the time, she was with actor Johnny Depp.
He was in Australia filming a Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
And he brought his two dogs. But he failed to tell the government, which is
the law.
Barnaby Joyce rudely said the two dogs should go back to the U.S.
Barnaby
Joyce
This of course, made Heard angry.
And now, to get back at him, she has her own big, fluffy Barnaby Joyce at
home.

Hello everybody, and welcome to a new episode of News Bites!
I'm Trevor Tortomasi...

In today's news:
Pingtung goes green, a new animal is discovered, and a new movie returns to
the world of Harry Potter.

________________________________
More Pingtung Homes Switching to Green Power
It can be difficult to see some kinds of energy (能源) with our eyes.
So how do we know if it's green?
Well, "green energy" means it is produced (產生) from natural resources
We can get green energy from the sun, by using solar panels (太陽能板) that
give us electricity (電).
We can also get it from wind, by using windmills (風車) that make electricity
when they turn.
And we can even get green energy from water, by using rivers that flow very
quickly (流得很快) to make more energy.
It's very important that we use as much green energy as we can.
And one city is doing its best to help!
Homes in Pingtung are getting ready to get almost all of their electricity
from green energy.
Pingtung County (屏東縣) already gets most of its energy from solar panels,
which can support 75 percent (75趴) of its homes.
And they're still building more!
The county started this project in the year 2019, and they plan to finish by
the end of 2022.
When we get our energy from things like coal-fired power plants, we create a
lot of heat, which goes into our atmosphere.
That heat makes our planet a little bit hotter every year.
This is called "global warming" (全球暖化), and it causes a lot of problems.
So the more we use green energy, the healthier our planet will be, and the
healthier we will be, too.
And we can thank the people of Pingtung for helping to be a part of that
change!

New Species of Giant Tortoise Discovered
Some people might think we have already found all the different types of
animals that we can.
But in reality (事實上), there are almost always more kinds of animals to
discover.
In fact, scientists are discovering new species (新物種) of animals almost
every day!
They may not always be as different as dogs are from cats, or birds are from
fish.
But there are still many important differences to find, which can help us
understand more about how they evolve over time.
And recently, animal researchers have found a new species of giant tortoise
It lives on the Galapagos Islands
When researchers were studying the DNA of these gigantic tortoises, they
found that some of them were from one family, and some of them were from a
much different family.
And because tortoises can live to be very old, this means the different
families must have lived separately (分開的) for a very long time.
This kind of information helps scientists study how the animals live, and why
some other kinds of tortoises have gone extinct (絕種了).
So who knows what we'll find next?

New "Fantastic Beasts" Movie in Theaters in April
Have you ever read a book about Harry Potter
The first book, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", was published
(出版) in the year 1997.
The book was written by J.K. Rowling, and it was made into a movie in the
year 2001.
Many years later, J.K. Rowling also wrote more books, called "Fantastic
Beasts and Where to Find Them".
These newer books didn't have the character Harry Potter in them, but they
were still set in the same world!
And now, Harry Potter fans (粉絲) can look forward to a new movie about the
Harry Potter world.
It's called "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore".
It tells the story of Hogwarts' headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, before he was
put in charge of the wizarding school.
In a trailer for the movie, we can see Dumbledore and his friends try to stop
a powerful dark wizard.
Dumbledore leads a team made up of other wizards (男巫), witches (女巫), and
a "muggle" (普通人).
The entire movie will be released in April.

Firefly Season Begins in Kaohsiung
You aren't likely to forget fireflies (螢火蟲) if you've seen them before.
These special insects light up the skies at dusk (黃昏), just before
nighttime.
National Geographic says there are about 2,000 different kinds of fireflies.
They live in parts of Asia and the Americas which are very humid (潮濕).
Fireflies use their lights to communicate (溝通) with each other, and to find
a mate.
Each firefly uses a special pattern to communicate with other fireflies.
If he sees a female he likes, he flashes his light every six seconds.
Fireflies aren't an endangered species (瀕危物種), but the scientists who
study them are getting very worried.
They say fewer fireflies are coming out during the summer
They are difficult to keep track of (追蹤、確保瞭解), since they are very
small.
Another problem is that a firefly's lifespan (壽命) is very short.
They only live between one to three weeks.
If you live in an area where there are plenty of electric lights, it will be
very difficult to spot fireflies.
Scientists say our lights are a problem for fireflies, because the lights
make it difficult for the insects to see each other.
If you haven't seen these beautiful insects before, you might want to go to
Kaohsiung's Namasia District, where fireflies appear every year.
Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai says firefly season happens in March every year,
and 15 different species of firefly that can be found there.
To make it easy to travel to the area, the city government plans to use
shuttle buses that will take visitors to a trail in Namasia District for 30
minutes of firefly viewing.
But you'll need to tickets to join the tour.
Firefly viewing season will end on April 30th.

A Big Change Comes to Starbucks
Starbucks wants to reduce (減少) waste from its shops by 50 percent.
Each year, the coffee chain uses up to 7 billion disposable cups
It's no wonder then, that whether or not you drink coffee, you'll recognize a
Starbucks cup when you see it.
But Starbucks hopes that by the end of next year, those paper and plastic
cups will become a thing of the past.
The company says it won't be using these disposable cups anymore.
The company says that by the end of next year, customers in the United States
and Canada will be able to use their own cups for every Starbucks visit.
But what if someone forgets to bring their own cup?
Starbucks has an answer for that too.
The store will ask you to pay a deposit (押金).
Then you can borrow a cup, and bring it back next time.
This program is also being tested in Japan, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.
The company hopes to make reusable (可重複使用的) cups widely used by 2025.
As a result, we may not be seeing too many paper or plastic Starbucks cups in
a few years.

But the song "We Don't Talk About Bruno" wasn't nominated for Best Song.
That's because Disney decided it wanted to choose another song from the same

Hello everybody, and welcome to a new episode of News Bites!
I'm Trevor Tortomasi...
And I'm Nancy Sun.
In today's news:
No more styrofoam cups for Taiwan, things get more expensive, and Marcel
makes a movie.
All that and more, coming up next.
________________________________
No More Styrofoam Cups for Taiwan
If you forget your reusable (環保杯) cups at home, it may be time to change
that.
Starting from July 1st, Taiwan's Environmental Protection Agency will not
allow stores to use single-use polystyrene, or "styrofoam" (保麗龍) cups
anymore.
This means you'll probably need a reusable cup, when you buy drinks from
coffee shops and tea shops, from places like FamilyMart or 7-11, or even at
fast food (速食) stores and supermarkets.
Polystyrene, or "styrofoam", is one of the most popular plastics in the world.
It is formed when its molecules (分子) connect together to become a long
chain (鍊子).
A German inventor discovered polystyrene during the 1930s, but it wasn't
"officially" invented until 1941.
Companies like using it for packaging because polystyrene is very flexible
But polystyrene is bad for the environment, because it is very, very
difficult to recycle (回收).
And companies like making polystyrene, more than they like reusing or
recycling it.
To recycle what is known as "food-grade" (食品級) polystyrene, the food from
containers has to be washed off first, before it is dried.
Then it is ground into something called "fluff".
Fluff is melted, and then turned into threads made with polystyrene.
That means only 12 percent of polystyrene gets recycled in the end.
Because polystyrene cannot pollute our air or our water, some people think
polystyrene is not so bad.
But the bad part is, most of the polystyrene that people make ends up in the
ocean.
Fish and other animals could die if they eat the polystyrene.
This means, like banning (禁止) the use of plastic straws, banning
polystyrene could be the only way to keep this type of plastic out of our
environment.
And that will protect not only Taiwan's fish, but also other animals that
might live near the water, too.
________________________________
Why Are Things More Expensive?
If you go to the market with someone from your family, like your
grandparents, parents, or uncle and aunt, you might hear them complaining.
You might hear them say "Why is everything so expensive?"
It's because of something called inflation
That's when the price of something goes up.
And that means you can buy less with the money you have.
For example, when your candy bar used to cost 30 NT, and it now costs 33 NT,
that's inflation.
When the price of your favorite snack goes from 20 NT to 25 NT, that's
inflation too.
Inflation is when things become so expensive that you cannot buy as many
things with the money you earn.
Inflation can happen for many, many reasons.
Sometimes, the materials (原料) used to make something become more expensive.
And sometimes, the cost of gasoline, which is used to bring things from one
place to another, becomes more expensive.
And sometimes rent (租金), which is the money a shopkeeper (店主人) needs to
pay someone who owns the building, can get more expensive.
If rent goes up, prices go up too.
The problem with inflation is that when things become more expensive, you can
buy fewer things with your money.
Inflation might sound like a very bad thing.
But that's not always the case.
Sometimes it is a sign that many people are earning money, so they can buy
more things.
And if everyone is working, that can be a good thing.
