Hi and welcome to News Bites!
I'm Nancy Sun, and I'm Philip Brossard.
Today, it's all about the environment!
We hear from people trying to save animals in Taiwan, then learn about the
death of a glacier in Iceland, before we hear a little kpop music!
-------
Animal Rights Groups Want Government Protection for Wildlife
動保聯盟呼籲政府保護瀕危物種
Taiwan is filled with animals not found anywhere else in the world
But a group of people say the government is not doing enough to protect them.
The Taiwan Animal Protection Monitor Network says it has been 30 years, since
the government passed laws to protect wildlife (野生動物).
Wildlife is actually two words put together: wild, like things that live out
in nature, without any help or control from people, and life, like living
things.
But the animal rights group says there is still a major problem of endangered
animals close to disappearing.
The group says there are only around 500 leopard cats, 200 to 600 Asian black
bears, and 50 Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins left in Taiwan.
And government data also show that Taiwan has six bird species that are
critically endangered (極度瀕危), meaning they are very very close to
becoming extinct, almost completely gone, close to being all dead.
The group wants the government to put more money towards saving such animals.
---------
Iceland Holds Farewell Ceremony for Glacier
冰島為冰河辦告別式
People in Iceland have said goodbye to a glacier (冰河). A river of ice,
found in coldest places on earth.
Okjokull was about 700 years old, and was the smallest glacier in Iceland.
It was also the first glacier to be officially declared dead by scientists,
because it was not thick enough to move anymore.
In live glaciers, the ice is heavy enough to move and change shape because of
the pull of gravity.
But the snow and ice in Okjokull melted so much that it is too small and has
stopped moving.
Scientists say the glacier died because of climate change.
Iceland's Prime Minister held a ceremony to say goodbye to the glacier, and
put down a sign to show where it had been.

A Member of BTS Has Released an English Song
BTS的 團員出了英文歌
Are you fans of K-pop? 韓國流行音樂? The K in K-pop is short for Korean,
while the 'pop' is short for popular music.
One of the members of the K-pop supergroup BTS has released a solo song.
Not only that, the track, by member V, is entirely in English.
Called Winter Bear, the song has been released with a full music video as
well.
In the music video, V is seen wandering through cities around the world, such
as Paris, London, Los Angeles, and New York.
It shows him taking photos of local sights, or just hanging out in the
various different cities.
This makes people think that the music video was shot while BTS was on their
world tour, called Love Yourself: Speak Yourself.
Fans obviously in love with this new song, and the music video is one of the
top trending videos on social media platforms.

RECAP
So in today's News Bites….
An animal rights group want the government to do more to protect Taiwan's
wildlife.
Wildlife (野生動物) = animals living out in nature, without help or control
from people
They want the government to spend more money on protecting these animals.
-------
In Iceland…
The government held a ceremony to say goodbye to a glacier.
A glacier ((冰河)) is a river of ice, formed in some of the coldest parts of
the world.
In live glaciers, the ice is heavy enough to move and change shape because of
the pull of gravity.
Scientists declared the Okjokull (Wok-ya-kug) glacier as dead, because it has
melted too much
Scientists say the glacier died because of climate change.
----------
And a BTS member released an English song
V is a k-pop singer 韓國流行音樂. K for Korean, while the 'pop' is short for
popular music.
V's new song is called "Winter Bear". He has also released a full music video
for the song.

Hi and welcome to News Bites!
I'm Nancy Sun, and I'm Philip Brossard
For today, how would you like to ride on a bus with no driver? Or sail across
the Atlantic Ocean on a boat with no toilet? Or go to the amusement park as
many times as you want for free?
All that and more, on today's episode!
New Taipei Testing Driverless E-buses
新北市無人駕駛巴士年底測試運轉
Driverless electric buses will soon be running on the streets of New Taipei.
City officials say the driverless e-buses (無人駕駛電動公車) will start
service later this year.
Electric (電動) cars, buses, and scooters, are more and more common around
the world.
They are better for the environment because electric vehicles do not make air
pollution.
And the e-buses being tested in Danhai New Town will also be driverless,
meaning the buses will drive themselves.
The buses will help people get to the Danhai lightrail system.
Teenage Environmental Activist Crosses the Atlantic
瑞典少女抗暖化乘帆船橫渡大西洋
A 16 year old girl sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to fight global warming.
Global warming (地球暖化) is the earth getting hotter and hotter.
Scientists say our planet is warming up faster than it ever has before.
If the earth warms up too much or too quickly, life could become very
difficult for all living things. Some scientists say 30-40-percent of the
world's animals could die out.
Some people also call what's happening on earth climate change (氣候變化)
And 16-year-old Greta Thunberg from Sweden wants to stop it.
She left the United Kingdom (英國) on a boat, and sailed for 15 days.
There were three adults on the boat with Greta, including her father.
Her boat is 18-meters long, and it does not put out any air pollution.
The boat has no shower or toilet, and they ate freeze-dried (冷凍乾燥) food.
After sailing 4-thousand-800-km, she arrived in New York City.
Greta says she did this to tell people that "our war on nature must end".
She was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize (諾貝爾和平獎) earlier this year.
Taipei Amusement Park Sees 10 Mil. Visitor
兒童新樂園破千萬旅客
The Taipei Children's Amusement Park has broken the 10 million visitor mark.
Visitor, 旅客, is someone who travels to another location, or who is a guest
in a place that is not their home.
The lucky 10 millionth visitor was presented with an unlimited pass to the
park and its attractions for a full year.
Unlimited, 無限, means without any maximum or restrictions.
The five visitors before and after the 10 millionth each got a season pass.
Four of the winners were first-time visitors to the park, including a mother
and son who had traveled all the way from Changhua to Taipei just to come to
the park.
Many of the winners were not children or parents but rather young couples,
which operators say shows the park is a popular spot for dates.

go to the park as many times as they want.
Some other visitors also got unlimited passes, but for a season, instead of a
full year.

Are they a bad example for young people?
Here's what Karr from Taipei's Ge-zhi Junior High School had to say...

On the other hand, Alice, also from Ge-zhi Junior High School, thinks young
people can learn a lot from some influencers.

Hi, and welcome to today's News Bites
I'm Nancy Sun, and I'm Philip Brossard
For today's episode...
an athlete from Norway got some good luck from a Changhua temple,
France is trying to deal with record high temperatures,
and Taipei is listed as one of the best cities for health in the entire
world.
----------------
Taiwan Temple Made Famous by Norwegian Athlete
挪威選手戴台灣宮廟帽奪冠
A Taiwan temple has become famous because of an athlete from Norway.
23-year-old Gustav Iden won a triathalon (鐵人三項) in France.
A triathalon is a sports competition, where the athletes must swim, bike, and
run without stopping to win a race.
Gustav did this over 70-km to win first place.
But in a photo of him crossing the finish line, many people noticed he was
wearing a cap (棒球帽) with the Chinese words "埔鹽順澤宮"
This is a temple (寺廟) in Taiwan's Changhua County.
A temple is a place, usually a building, where people pray to gods, or do
other religious things.
Why is the athlete from Norway wearing a hat from a Taiwan temple?
Gustav says he found the cap on the streets of Japan.
He thought the cap looked cool, and asked his Japanese friend about the words
on the cap. His friend did not know, but said the cap probably "came from
Taiwan".
Gustav decided to wear it for the race in France, and won.
Now many people believe the hat gives good luck.
埔鹽順澤宮, the temple in Taiwan, says many people have visited and asked for
the cap. They have given away so many, that they are ordering 1000 more.
Gustav has also talked about this amazing story on IG, saying "I really love
you Taiwan".
----------------
France Heat Waves Cause Deaths
法國熱浪1500人死亡
The government in France says 1-thousand 500 people died because of heat
waves.
A heat wave (熱浪) is a time of very very hot weather, that usually lasts two
or more days.
In June and July this year, France and other parts of Europe saw
record-breaking temperatures.
France had its highest-ever recorded temperature in the town of
Gallargues-le-Montueux. It was 46 degrees Celsius!
That's hotter than Taiwan! The highest temperature in Taiwan so far this year
was in Taitung, at 39 degrees Celsius.
This summer, France had 18 days of extreme high temperatures.
Experts say the number of deaths in the country during those two heat waves,
was 9.1-percent higher than normal.
They are worried that these high temperatures, caused by global warming, will
become the new "normal" for Europe.
Most of Europe is not used to dealing with such hot weather.
Government reports say less than 5-percent of houses in Europe have air
conditioning.
Many scientists say we must take action to stop global warming, or this type
of extreme weather will happen more and more often.

Taipei Among Best Health Security Cities in the World
台北健康安全非常棒
Taipei has been listed among the best cities for health in the entire world.
A magazine called the Economist has released its annual Safe Cities Index.
Information for the Index was gathered by the magazine's Intelligence Unit.
Taipei has ranked 22nd in the world overall, but was listed as the tenth in
Health Security.
Security, 安全, is another way of saying safety.
Health is 健康, so health security is 健康安全.
In the other three categories, Taipei came in 23rd in Digital Security, 24th
in Infrastructure Security, and 20th for Personal Security.
Tokyo was listed as the safest city out of the 60 included in the study.
Out of the 13 cities in the study that had between 5 and 10 million
residents, Taipei came in 7th.

Hello everybody, and welcome to a new episode of News Bites!
I'm Nancy Sun...

All that and more, coming up next.

2022第一道曙光在蘭嶼
Catch 2022 First Sunrise on Orchid Island
Are you ready for the New Year?
If you want to see the first ray of sunlight of 2022 (2022第一道曙光), you
should head to Orchid Island.
The Central Weather Bureau says that light will appear on Orchid Island at
6:32 AM on New Year's Day.
And if you are staying on Taiwan proper (台灣本島), you should head to
Kenting.
The CWB says the first light to reach Taiwan proper will be in Kenting's Long
Keng Ecological Reserve at 6:35 AM.
In some countries around the world, people believe watching the first sunrise
of the new year can bring you good luck.
But many find it hard to get up that early.
So, if you would rather say goodbye to 2021, you might want to watch the last
sunset of the year (跨年日沒).
The CWB says you can see the last sunset visible in Taiwan proper in southern
Taiwan.
Just make sure you're along the Qi-gu seawall in Tainan City on December
31st, before 5:25 PM.
But the weather bureau says New Year's Eve and New Year's Day will be cold.
They say during those two days, northeasterly winds (東北季風) are very
strong.
So anyone planning to be outside those two days, should make sure to dress
warmly.
It would be hard to enjoy the beautiful views if you're freezing!
中央氣象局說本島平地最晚日沒出現在台南市七股海堤一帶,而元旦第一道曙光則出現在台東蘭嶼。

木乃伊 "數位開箱" 揭法老王真面目
Egyptian King Mummy Digitally "Unwrapped"
Scientists have used technology to "unwrap" a famous Egyptian mummy.
The mummy is a Egyptian pharaoh (法老,古埃及國王的稱號).
The mummy of Amenhotep I was found in 1881.
He has a wooden mask.
And he is covered with flower garlands (花環).
The mummy is around 3,500 years old.
Egyptian scientists never unwrapped him for study.
The mummy was too fragile (脆弱).
And they didn't want to damage his mask and flower garlands.
為保存面具和外層的花環,考古學家一直沒有解開木乃伊的繃帶。
So, scientists used a special software to scan the mummy.
This gave scientists a 3D picture of the mummy on a computer.
Then they "unwrapped" the 3D picture, to see the inside of the mummy.
And this way, they didn't even have to touch the fragile mummy.
This has helped them learn a lot about Amenhotep I.
They believe he was about 35 years old, and 169 centimeters tall when he died.
The pharaoh had curly hair (捲髮), and healthy teeth.
In fact, scientists say Amenhotep I looked like his father.
But they are still not sure why he died.
這次研究揭露Amenhotep I的面貌、年齡、健康狀況,還有很多木乃伊製作的獨特技術。
