South Korean police say, they've raided the office of Starbucks' local operation as part of an investigation into a failed marketing campaign.
Starbucks put out a campaign that many saw as defaming the Gwangju uprising, which took place on May 18, 1980.
The massacre saw military-backed rulers kill between 200 and 2000 protesters who were demonstrating for democracy.
The Starbucks ad in question attempted to promote a series of tumblers it calls the "SS Tank" by calling May 18th "Tank Day."
The police launched an investigation following complaints from relatives of victims of the massacre.
The campaign also used the slogan “Thwack it on the table!” which many read as a reference to a notorious 1987 police statement that attempted to cover up the torture death of student activist Park Jong-chol.
Authorities had incorrectly claimed that Park died after investigators “hit the desk with a thwack.”
Starbucks ultimately cancelled the campaign within hours and fired the chief executive of the Korean branch.
