Women face greater risk from Ebola in DRC
Posted on 2026-06-04 17:09:26
Health workers in the Congo are warning that women face a greater risk of
contracting ebola.

They say, that's because women are often the first caregivers when family
members get sick.

Women are historically disproportionately affected in Ebola outbreaks.

Experts say, when a loved one falls ill, women are the ones bathing them,
feeding them, and washing dirty clothes.

This puts them at a higher risk of contracting Ebola, which spreads through
contact with bodily fluids.

Women are also often tasked with preparing bodies for burial.

In the first recorded Ebola outbreak in the 70s, women accounted for 56% of
deaths...

while in the 2018-2020 outbreak, women and girls made up about 2/3rds of
reported cases.
