EY says Japan-Philippines sea talks must not hurt Taiwan
Posted on 2026-06-04 15:37:13
The Executive Yuan says maritime boundary talks between Japan and the
Philippines must not harm Taiwan's rights.

Japan and the Philippines plan to discuss boundaries for their exclusive
economic zones and continental shelves.

The talks have drawn attention because the waters overlap heavily with
Taiwan's own economic zone.

Cabinet spokesperson Michelle Lee (李慧芝) says Taiwan will keep communicating
with both countries.

She says Taiwan has asked Japan and the Philippines not to harm Taiwan's
interests in any agreement.

China says the talks infringe on Chinese maritime rights, citing its
one-China position.

Lee says China should not use the issue to turn waters east of Taiwan into
its internal sea through military force.

The Foreign Ministry says it supports peaceful maritime dialogue based on
international law.
