The U-S State Department is backing comments two former American Institute in Taiwan officials concerning World War-II era documents not determining Taiwan's political status.
Former A-I-T chair Richard Bush and former A-I-T deputy director Robert Wang said on Saturday said that a Chinese official mischaracterized World War II-era documents as stating that Taiwan was ceded to the China.
Both also stated that the U-S does not consider the political status of Taiwan to have been determined by any post-World War II documents, and that Washington expects the issue to be resolved peacefully.
The U-S State Department is insisting that the comments accurately conveyed Washington's stance on the matter.
An unnamed A-I-T spokesperson says China "intentionally mischaracterizes World War II-era documents in an effort to support its "coercive campaign to subjugate Taiwan" ...
.. but "Beijing's narratives are simply false, and none of these documents determined Taiwan's ultimate political status."
Speaking in mid-August China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Proclamation "clearly defined Japan's responsibility for the war and required that Japan return all the territories it had stolen from China, including Taiwan."
