Traffic deaths fell in 2024; pedestrian deaths 16 year low

Traffic deaths in 2024 fell to a three-year low.
According to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the latest road safety data reveals that 2,950 people died in traffic accidents within 30 days of the incidents in 2024.
Notably, pedestrian fatalities dropped to a 16-year low, with 366 deaths -- 3.7% fewer than the previous year.
Drunk-driving fatalities saw the most significant improvement, falling by 36.8% to 160 deaths.
Motorcycle accident deaths and elderly people killed in traffic accidents also decreased.
However, deaths among minors increased by 2.6%, reaching 78.
And of these, 40 teenage fatalities involved unlicensed scooter drivers.
Minister of Transportation Chen Shih-kai urged the Ministry of Education to help address this issue and announced plans to evaluate high-risk areas for improvements in public transport and bike-sharing options.
