No Acid Rain in Taiwan, Despite More Acidic Rain in the North

The Environmental Protection Administration says despite slightly higher levels of rainwater acidity in the north, none of its monitoring stations have recorded pH levels that qualify as acid rain over the past two years.
The statement comes after local media cited a survey by the National Central University as saying that the five locations with the most acidic rain were located in the north.
Media reports have said the study found that the average pH of precipitation at the E-P-A's 14 monitoring sites last year was 5.75.
The stations with the most acidic rain, were Hsinchu with 5.29, An-Bu on Yangmingshan in Taipei with 5.36, and Zhong-Li in Taoyuan with 5.37.
However, the E-P-A's Department of Air Quality is disputing elements of how the media have been interpreting the data.
And according to the E-P-A, the key takeaway from the study is that none of its monitoring stations in 2021 or 2022 recorded an average rain pH of 5.0 or below, which is a commonly used definition for acid rain.
