Tainan is erecting road signs to protect a species of terrestrial crab.
The southern city's Agriculture Department says the estuary where the Yanshui River meets the ocean, are prime mating spots for the Cardisoma carnifex, or Brown Land Crab.
Officials say June to November is when pregnant female crabs of the species head towards the water, often having to cross roads to make their way to safe places to give birth.
The department says it has set up signs along busy roads to remind motorists to be on the lookout for the crustaceans.
In addition, the city government is dimming street lights near areas frequented by the crabs, to avoid accidentally attracting the animals.
