WTO Committee Slated to Discuss China Fruit Import Ban
Posted on 2021-10-28 07:20:03
The World Trade Organization has confirmed that a committee will discuss
"specific trade concerns" over China's decision to suspend imports of wax
apples and custard apples from Taiwan.

W-T-O Communications Officer Fernando Puchol says the issue has been put on
the agenda of a meeting slated for November 3 though 5.
China banned imports of the fruits on September 20, citing the discovery of
mealybugs in several shipments from Taiwan.

And the Council of Agriculture sent documents to Taiwan's W-T-O mission
earlier this month requesting it file the "specific trade concerns" over the
import ban.

It's the first time that Taiwan has filed "specific trade concerns" with the
gobal trade body over China's move to suspend imports of fresh fruit.

Agriculture Minister Chen Ji-zhong says China had failed to provide Taiwan
with any scientific evidence or official explanation for the unilateral
import suspension, which left the country with no choice but to submit its
concerns to the W-T-O.

And Chen says his office is now "looking forward to a positive outcome."
