The World Health Organization has chosen Taiwan's domestically developed Medigen coronavirus vaccine to take part in an international clinical trial platform.
According to the global health body, the Medigen vaccine has been chosen along with a vaccine developed by American company Inovio Pharmaceuticals, for the Solidarity Trial Vaccines platform.
The W-H-O says the platform is "designed to rapidly evaluate the efficacy and safety of promising new candidate vaccines selected by an independent vaccine prioritization advisory group composed of leading scientists and experts."
Two additional vaccines are also expected to be chosen for the clinical trials co-sponsored by the W-H-O and the health ministries of Colombia, Mali and the Philippines.
Medigen spokesman Leo Lee says the company is pleased about the news, and will continue with ongoing clinical trials, so its products can be approved internationally.
