Taipei and Manila to renew investment guarantee pact
Posted on 2017-10-12 08:19:13
Vice Economics Minister Wang Mei-hua says the Philippines is likely to be the
first of six Southeast Asian countries to renew a bilateral investment
guarantee agreement with Taiwan.

According to Wang, negotiations on the deal are on track and due to be
completed by December.

Similar agreements with Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia
are also expected to be renewed under the New Southbound Policy.

But Wang says the pace of those negotiations is slower than with the
Philippines.

Taiwan signed the agreements with the six countries in the 1990s and is
seeking to renew them as the government seeks to forge closer business ties
and better protect Taiwanese investments in the countries.

The New Southbound Policy is aimed at establishing and upgrading free trade
agreements with the target countries and also seeks to build exchanges and
substantive partnerships in the areas of agriculture and healthcare.
