Chiayi reports second Japanese encephalitis case
Posted on 2017-07-17 09:14:14
A second case of Japanese encephalitis has been confirmed in Chia-Yi County,
bringing the total number of such cases in Taiwan this year to 14.

County health officials say the latest case was confirmed in a 57-year-old
man and resident of Shui-Shang Township, who developed a fever and
temporarily lost consciousness on July 7-th and sought emergency treatment at
a hospital.

He was confirmed to have been infected with Japanese encephalitis on July
14-th.

He is now being treated in an intensive care unit.

The man did not live near pigs, pigeons or poultry farms -- which are often
breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

A 54-year-old woman in Chia-Yi County was confirmed to have been infected
with Japanese encephalitis earlier this month.

Health officials said vaccination is the best way to guard against the
mosquito-borne disease.
