Controversial Hong Kong bookshop to open in Taipei
Posted on 2017-07-17 09:14:13
The former manager of a Hong Kong-based bookstore ordered closed last year
says he plans to reopen the shop in Taipei next year.

Lam Wing-kei has been quoted as saying the reopening is symbolic of the
resistance against China.

Causeway Bay Books was forcefully closed last year following the detention of
five of its staff, including Lam.

According to Lam, the Taipei store will be sponsored by an anonymous Hong
Kong democracy group.

Lam visited Taiwan to attend the Taipei International Book Exhibition in
February of this year.

At the time he denied reports that he had plans to re-open Causeway Bay Books
in Taipei.

But reports say Lam is now eyeing Taipei for his new bookstore due to what is
being described as "encouragement by Hong Kong pro-democracy advocates."
