Subject: 3PM Intro Return to Table of contents Good afternoon. It's 3 o'clock. I'm _______ Subject: DPP: Tourism Not Up to Snuff Return to Table of contents The opposition is blasting the government's decision to allow greater numbers of Chinese tourists in Taiwan, saying it is causing the country's tourism industry to deteriorate. Led by legislator Cai tong-rong, the DPP lawmakers said that President Ma Ying-jeou claimed that mainland visitors would bring business worth 60 billion NT annually, but the numbers so far don't support him. They also say that the arrival of so many Chinese has turned back the clock on tourism quality here, putting current levels the same as in the 70s. Cai said that not only has the opening to Chinese tourists not improved Taiwan's tourism industry, it has also driven away visitors from other countries. Another lawmaker added that the mainlanders aren't spending as much as forecast, and occupancy in local hotels is down from the same period last year. (EG) Subject: DPP blasts Opening of Strait Midline Return to Table of contents The DPP is blasting the suggestion that Taiwan and China open up the midline of the Taiwan Strait. Beijing's Taiwan Affairs Office head Wang Yi suggested that the two sides could sign a memorandum of understanding to that effect. Wang said that this could lead to greater trust between the two militaries, which could help resolve the issue of the missiles China has pointed at the island. However, the DPP says this idea would be tantamount to giving up Taiwan's defenses against the mainland, and they will oppose it to the end. They say that the nation's security takes precedence over everything else, and this suggestion doesn't merit any consideration at all. (EG) Subject: President Manuel Zelaya Warned to Stay Away Return to Table of contents An interim government in Honduras warned ousted President Manuel Zelaya to stay away but indicated it could be more conciliatory in talks today with the Organization of American States over the country's crisis. Roberto Micheletti, head of a caretaker leadership set up after an army coup, said he welcomed the chance to talk with OAS Secretary-General Jose Miguel Insulza, who was expected to arrive in Honduras early today with an ultimatum to reinstate Zelaya or be suspended from the regional body. Micheletti said he could be open to holding an early presidential election and even a plebiscite on bringing Zelaya back to serve the last few months of his term. Insulza was cautious however, telling reporters late yesterday he doubted he could defuse the crisis in one visit. The new Honduran administration has so far rebuffed any attempt to bring back Zelaya, who was ousted in a dawn coup in a dispute over presidential term limits. Subject: The UN's top health official Calls Flu Unstoppable Return to Table of contents The UN's top health official has convened a forum in Mexico on swine flu, reportedly saying there's no way to stop the spread of the disease. The BBC quotes World Health Organization head Margaret Chan as saying with well over 100 countries reporting cases, once a fully fit pandemic virus emerges, its further international spread is unstoppable. However, the reports also has her stressing that the overwhelming majority of patients experienced mild symptoms and made a full recovery within a week, often in the absence of any form of medical treatment. The exceptions, she said, were pregnant women and people with underlying health problems, who were at higher risk from complications from the virus and should be monitored if they fell ill. As the summit opened, the UK alone was projecting more than 100,000 new cases of H1N1 a day by the end of the summer. Leaders and experts from 50 countries are in Cancun for the two-day meeting to discuss strategies for combating the virus. Subject: Rogue Broker Blamed for Spike in Oil Prices Return to Table of contents The startling spike in oil prices to their highest level this year on Tuesday is being blamed on a rogue broker who placed a massive bet in the Brent oil market, triggering almost $10m of losses for his company. According to the Financial Times ... PVM Oil Associates, the world’s largest over-the-counter oil brokerage, said it had been the “victim of unauthorised trading”.
