Subject: MOEA Head On Economic Recovery
Return to Table of contents
First, Taiwan news...
The Minister of Economic Affairs believes Taiwan's economy will recover from
the recent global crises faster than the rest of the international economy.
Yin Qi-ming says international experts believe that the overall global
economic structure will take about a year or more to return to normal
following the recent spikes in energy and commodity costs and the financial
crisis that hit Wall Street.
However, he said Taiwan's fundamentals are in good shape, so the local
economy should recover somewhat faster than the world's as a whole, though he
didn't say by exactly how much.
Yin said that, as a free-market economy, Taiwan will naturally be influenced
by global trends, but he said the new administration is working hard to help
the disadvantaged here and to make sure that businesses can operate as
normal.

Subject: Double Ten brings good business to hotels in Hualian
Return to Table of contents
Hotel rooms in the Hualian area are fully booked for the period October 10
through 12, the three-day weekend that begins with Double-Ten Day on
Friday.
Hotel operators say even smaller, homestyle accommodations in the city and
county of Hua-lian are fully booked, mainly because many people from around
Taiwan and overseas plan to attend the Double Ten gala night, to be held
Friday at Hua-lian Stadium, and go sightseeing during the two following
days.
This is the first time that the national day gala night, featuring well-known
pop stars, will be held in Hua-lian.
There's one inconvenience, though... All train tickets between Taipei and
Hualian on October 10 and 12 have been sold out.
As for air transportation, only one airline, TransAsia Airways is operating
the Taipei-Hualian route, and there are still seats available on its late
afternoon flights tomorrow.
The flights back to Taipei from Hualian on Sunday are solidly booked.

Subject: Milk
Return to Table of contents
in health news...
China's Ministry of Health says nearly 10,700 Chinese infants and children
are still in hospital after drinking toxic milk and milk formula.
It last updated the figures on Sept. 21, when it said that 12,892 children
were being treated for kidney problems caused by drinking milk tainted with
the industrial chemical melamine, which is at the centre of the country's
latest food safety scare.
No more infants have died from the contaminated milk, leaving the death toll
at four.
Eight of the 10,666 children still in hospital are in serious condition,
adding that altogether 36,144 have left the hospital after being treated.
It did not give an overall figure for the number of children affected so far,
but reports from local media across the country compiled by Reuters suggest
the number of affected children has risen to nearly 94,000.
While the number of children in hospital is declining, new cases are still
cropping up.
The ministry said that on Wednesday alone, 539 children were admitted to
hospital after drinking melamine-laced milk, while 2,067 others checked out
after being treated.
