Subject: 3PM Intro Return to Table of contents Good afternoon. It's time for ICRT news at 3. I'm Mike Woodward. Subject: Taiwanese player advances at U.S. tennis open Return to Table of contents First, Taiwan news... Taiwan's Zhan Yong-ran has scored two wins at the U.S. Open, advancing for the first time in 17 attempts to the third round of the women's singles in a Grand Slam tournament. She has also reached the second round in the women's doubles with China's Zheng Jie. Zhan's previous best had been second-round appearances at the U.S. Open in 2008, the Australian Open in 2009 and at Wimbledon this year. Zhan is expected to meet top seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, who defeated Taiwan's Zhang Kai-zhen later in the day. In addition, Zhan and Zheng advanced to the second round in the women's doubles. She began playing with Zheng in February and the pair have twice reached the final four in international events. They are seeded seventh. (JL) Subject: Taiwan planning to sell eggs to Hong Kong Return to Table of contents The Council of Agriculture says Taiwan is planning to sell eggs to Hong Kong in an attempt to alleviate the impact from an oversupply in the domestic market. One C-O-A official says the plan to export eggs to Hong Kong, where about 6 million residents consume mostly imported eggs, is expected to stabilize domestic egg prices by increasing consumption. He points out that the high summer temperatures have boosted egg production and caused supply to outstrip demand in the local market, sending domestic egg prices into a tailspin. Currently, Taiwan produces about 18 million eggs a day, compared with a daily consumption of 17 million. The COA says since late August, the average domestic wholesale egg price has fallen to about 28 NT per kilo from an April peak of 42, and that does not even cover the cost of production. (JL) Subject: oil platform Return to Table of contents in world news... An oil platform that burned off the Louisiana coast is the second such disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in less than five months. This time, the Coast Guard said there was no leak, and no one was killed. The Coast Guard initially reported that an oil sheen a mile long and 100 feet wide had begun to spread from the site, about 200 miles west of the source of BP's massive spill. But hours later, the Coast Guard said crews were unable to find any spill. The company that owns the platform, Houston-based Mariner Energy, did not know what caused the fire. Workers who were pulled from the water told rescuers that there was a blast on board, but Mariner Energy's Patrick Cassidy said he considered what happened aboard the platform a fire, not an explosion. Subject: Mexico Return to Table of contents A shootout between soldiers and suspected drug cartel members in northeastern Mexico left 25 purported gunmen dead. A reconnaissance flight over Ciudad Mier in Tamaulipas state spotted several gunmen in front of a property. When troops on the ground moved in, gunmen opened fire, starting a gunbattle that killed 25 suspected cartel members. The statement said two soldiers were injured but none were killed. Earlier, a military spokesman had said the shootout happened when troops on patrol in the town of General Trevino, in neighboring Nuevo Leon state, came under fire from a ranch allegedly controlled by the Zetas drug gang. Subject: Sharapova Return to Table of contents in tennis news from the U.S. Open... Maria Sharapova advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic. The 14th-seeded Sharapova had as much trouble with the wind at Arthur Ashe Stadium as with her 68th-ranked opponent. Sharapova is looking for her second U.S. Open title and fourth overall in the Grand Slam tournaments. Playing under the lights in New York, Sharapova came suitably dressed. Her dark blue dress had a black collar and lapels, giving it a tuxedo-like effect. Subject: weather Return to Table of contents Taiwan weather forecast for tonight according to the Central Weather Bureau, fairly clear skies up north and mid-island; intermittent rain down south. Temps tonite in the 26 to 29 range island-wide. At the moment it's sunny in northern and central Taiwan, cloudy in the south with current temperatures: Taipei 33, Taichung 33 and Gauhsiung 33.
