Subject: Egmont Looking into Wu's Accounts since 2006
Return to Table of contents
First, Taiwan news...
Reports claim that the international anti-money-laundering organization, the
Egmont Group, had been looking into the former first lady's account activity
since late 2006.
During today's court proceedings against former Intelligence Bureau chief Ye
Shen-mao, it was revealed that Egmont began investigating Wu Shu-zhen's
international bank accounts in November 2006 right after she was formally
indicted on charges of embezzling from the presidential state affairs fund.
Also, Egmont is said to have reported to the Taiwan government just a month
later about suspected money-laundering using those accounts.
Control Yuan investigators believe that when she was indicted, Wu, fearing
her accounts would be brought to light, cleared out the funds and transferred
them to other overseas accounts under the name of family members.
The Egmont report on these activities were sent to Ye, who turned over the
documents to then-president Chen Shui-bian instead of to investigators, which
led to Ye's current indictment.

Subject: Taiwan to send animals to China
Return to Table of contents
As China prepares two endangered giant pandas for Taiwan as a symbol of
warming ties, the island plans to send a rare goat-and-deer duo to its
political rival as well.
A Taipei city government spokesman says, "In keeping with normal practice for
exchanging animals, we need to offer species that are special to Taiwan. The
goat and the deer are both native."
Chinese and Taiwan officials must approve the animal exchange but are
expected to give it a nod.
The Taipei city zoo will donate the native sika deer, a critically endangered
species, and a Formosan serow, a small but agile mountain goat that's also
seldom seen anymore in Taiwan.
Despite the Taiwan offer's smaller size, some say neither party is getting
any better a deal, as any of the three species may adapt poorly to their new
habitats.

in regional news...
Officials in the north Chinese province at the heart of a toxic milk scandal
hid a coal mine explosion in July that killed more than 30 miners.
The People's Daily says that 22 officials are being investigated by
prosecutors and one was arrested, accused of covering up the mine explosion
in Hebei province on July 14, weeks before the Olympic Games opened in
Beijing on Aug 8.
The blast in the unlicensed Li-jia-wa mine in Yu County, also pronounced Wei
County, was set off by explosives illegally stored down the mine shaft.
Xinhua news agency says relatives of the dead were kept quiet through
payments and threats.
