Game On 04/16/10

eg | 16 April, 2010 15:21

Hi everyone, and welcome to Game On, with me, Eric Gau.

It's going to be a bit Blizzard-heavy this week. First up, Blizzard has announced the mighty collector's edition for the long-awaited Starcraft 2, which is still slated for a mid-year release. It will contain a 176-page art book and a 2 gig USB drive made to look like Jim Raynor's dog tags, which come preloaded with the original StarCraft and Brood Wars. It'll also include a behind-the-scenes DVD with interviews, director commentary, and the like, plus a soundtrack of SC2's score. On top of that, the collector's edition will have issue zero of the Starcraft comic book, a world of warcraft in-game mini-thor vanity pet, and special downloadable content for your battle.net account, including a special skin for your Thor unit. It's priced at just under a hundred bucks, or about 3000 NT, and will only be available at retail. A final release date for the game is expected in the coming weeks.

Over in the World of Warcraft, we're getting a few glimpses at what's coming up in the next expansion, Cataclysm. On the forums there, developers have previewed some of the coming changes to the classes, including new mechanics, abilities, and the new mastery bonuses. Personally, most of the changes look like they'll be beneficial to my DPS warrior, but some of the changes will definitely affect how I play.

Warcraft developers have also given us a glimpse at one of the upcoming zones. Mount Hyjal will be for level 78 to 82 players, and will have the PCs helping defend the newly-exposed World Tree, Nordrassil, from agressors from the Firelands on the Elemental Planes. It will also introduce the Ancients, basically spirits and demigods who you must convince to help protect the tree.

In a bit of non-Blizzard news, the first trailer for Gears of War 3 came out. Called Ashes to Ashes, we get to see the heroes from the first two back in action, Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, though Dom is now sporting a beard. We also see female Gears for the first time, and Marcus looks to be wielding one of the new weapons, a double-barreled shotgun. The trailer starts with a running gunfight between the Gears and Locust, but then some Lambent enter the picture as well. We'll definitely be seeing more of those in the final game.

That's it for this edition! I'm Eric Gau, and until next time, Game on!
